I have a 1993 ES300. Is there a set mileage at which I should have the valves adjusted? My dealer is pushing me to do it even though the car sounds and runs fine.

You can usually hear them clicking over time. Some cars recommend 60,000 miles others 80,000. I do mine when I notice them clicking a little more than usual. It is good to adjust the lash. It is possible to go 100,000 miles but I would do it then at least. It is good to have everthing nice and flush in the valvetrain.

I personally have not done a valve lash job. It takes some special service tools to be done correctly as well as a selection of shims that need to be inserted. It is really pretty tight work and takes a little bit of skill. It is not impossible, but I have not tried yet. I Usually take it to a trusted mechanic for that one.

The clearance between the valve stem and the camshaft lobes. This increases due to wear over time and as a result needs periodic adjustment.

funny lexus goes for perfection with so many things but

not with self adjusting valves

like most cars today

or timing belts that actually last

like the new vdubs with a kevlar belt

( same stuff they make bullet proof vests from)
