sgriffith Posted July 3, 2004 Posted July 3, 2004 Well, after mulling it around it my mind for a while (and getting worse fuel economy), I decided to go with some premium gas (chevron w/ techron...love the stuff) and have already seen a 1.5 MPG increase in fuel economy. That is after 2 tanks....and it still seems to be climbing. Don't know if anyone else has had the same results, but I sure do like seeing higer numbers up on the display!! It is good for me mentally I guess :-) Anyone else experience a similar thing? I really didn't expect it to make any difference at all.
SKperformance Posted July 3, 2004 Posted July 3, 2004 all 3 of mine increase gas milage and power never mind less carbon build up to rob power and destroy sensros over time
93LSOwner Posted July 3, 2004 Posted July 3, 2004 I have on my friends Acura. I have never put less than 93 octane in my cars.

What is the average gas mileage when you used 87? What is the average gas mileage when you used 92/93?
mailrail Posted July 4, 2004 Posted July 4, 2004 I HAVE TO run premium in my Acura Legend, or it runs like crap. And since the owner's manual calls for it, it's probably the correct thing to do. I've gotta admit, however, that in these sky-high fuel prices time we're in, I cheat a little now and then and run mid-grade in it. One the main reasons that I ended up buying the Lexus last week and not the Mercedes ML-320 or the Volvo V-70, was because (unlike the aforementioned two) the Lexus uses regular fuel. The other big reason is that the Lexus is much nicer of a vehicle ALL AROUND! ;)
sgriffith Posted July 5, 2004 Author Posted July 5, 2004 I was getting around 18 (mostly highway) when using the 87 and now I am getting about 19.5 using 92....same driver, same road. It is a 2WD. I have become a huge fan of the Chevron w/techron gas. From what I have read, it keeps things running clean and is just a good maintenance thing. I know others say different, but I guess it just makes me sleep better at night. ;-)
93LSOwner Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 but I guess it just makes me sleep better at night. ;-) Exactly. :D
tds Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 Not only do you get better fuel economy but you get more horsepower as well. I use Sunoco 94 all the time in my 2001 RX300. Here is the reply I received from Lexus re Octane and the RX300. I interpret this response to mean I should be able to get an additional approx 10 hp by using 94 Octane gasoline. Here is the response: There is more than one "octane rating". Research Octane Number (RON) is a laboratory rating that manufacturers generally use. Motor Octane Number (MON) is another laboratory method of measurement. Anti Knock Index (AKI) is the number quoted at gas stations. It is an average of these two: RON + MON / 2 87AKI is equal to 91RON. The engine in the RX300 produces 220 hp on this "regular" fuel. If premium fuel is used (over 87AKI or 91RON), a slight improvement in power output is likely. The ignition system used on the RX300 continually monitors engine knock (detonation), and tailors spark advance to operate at where its peak performance can be obtained. Hence, the better the fuel, the better the potential performance (within limits, of course).
sgriffith Posted July 6, 2004 Author Posted July 6, 2004 I had to pick my RX up today from Grapevine (getting rear main seal & a strut mount replaced....thank the Lord for extended warranties!!) and right before I headed home I filled up with my 3rd tank of premium (93) and am up to 21.5 MPG. I just couldn't believe it. I had been sitting at or around 18 MPG for the longest time...and it just keeps getting better with each tank. Couldn't be more thrillled!!!
