  1. Did this on my 95 SC400 before it was wrecked. Aftermarket cost was $130 after core and $125 for labor. If you do your oil changes someplace that doesn't know Lexus make sure they top it off with the correct fluid. What I found is that many times they put in power steering fluid instead of ATF which causes it to leak due to different viscocity.
  2. I got mine at Manheim a few months ago..55k miles 2001 LS430 with sport suspension. Excellent shape (had all the paperwork including the lease documents from the previous owner) and ran me $32K with the auction fees. I buy all my cars there..for auctions it's more expensive then the others but they stand behind their reputation and the selection is unbeateable in the NorthEast. The paperwork sold the car to me since you can rollback the milage on any car for about $250-$300.
  3. I usually buy OEM but with power steering pumps Lexus doesn't have a good track record..experience from two SC400s and and a LS430. The ones sold by Lexus are made by other manucaturers like DENSO. Check out the manufacturer stamp on the pump and see if the company makes ones for your car.
  4. i hate car wrecks, at least you are ok. take it from a guy who got diddlyy from his car wreck (i didnt even get anything for my car, i had to replace it at MY expese) luckily for you you dont have to do the same. good luck, and if i can be of any assistance, dont hesitate to ask. ← this wasn't too bad considering he was 82nd airborne and could take a licking. Besides both of us have been in some pretty bad motorcycle accidents and walked away with some fractured ribs and a bone or two but not much else. I bought the car at a dealer auction since my cousin is is a used car dealer. In 1998 paid $27K for the SC with 40K on. We put 215K miles since then so I figure it cost me about $260/month to drive this car till this point if the insurance gives us $7K. Cheaper than getting a Camry.
  5. The other guys insurance company has admited fault, I'll wait to see how much they give us for the car. I'm hoping to get about $7K...will let you guys know.
  6. I've had this car for the the last six years and gave it to my brother about a month ago. He was leaving my house and was driving straight past a firehouse. A kid going the other way decides to make a turn into the firehouse abou 5 feet in front of my bro who was going about 40-50mph. The guy behind my bro also smashed into him. If it wasn't for the build quality and the long hood he would have been a gonner. The other car got it way worse The car is a 1995 SC400 with 255K miles on it and still riding like the first day I purchased it (in 1998 with 40k miles). I've spent about $1500 in regular maintenance and $1500 in non scheduled mainteance..and still could have gone another 100k at least. Check the pic (done with a mobile phone on the scene)
  7. Let me give you some wholesale number from dealer auctions in PA from last week: 2001 GS430 60K $17500 2001 GS430 25k $25000 2000 GS400 77K $17000 That should give you a good idea of what the dealers buy their cars for..should pay at most $2k more for a private sale.
  8. I don't know about VA cops being able to detect radar detectors but I know they give a lot of tickets to people having K40 installed since cars like BMWs have it as a factory/dealer option. Just incase I keep an old Cobra detector under the seat. If I get stopped I'll just make the cheapo radar as a donation to the VA patrol. On another note before I knew that radar detectors were illegal in VA I would drive around with one mounted on my windshield. After working in VA for 18 months I was never pulled over...maybe it was the MD tags on the car...who knows?
  9. I bought a 2001 LS430 6 months ago with the K40 installed front and back. I then tested it out with my Valentine1 that I brought over from my 1995 SC400. The V1 trumped the K40 every time. I'm now looking to do a clean install of the V1 and leave the K40 for Virginia driving only.
  10. I agree with the post...no major problems with 95 SC400 at 223K miles about 90% of maintenance items mentioned in the post above. The maintenance is not that expensive if you take it to a good shop and not the dealer, At 120K I replaced timing belt, water pump, accessory belt, distributor/cap, plugs, and wires for about $1000 including OEM parts..ordered from parts.com..way cheaper than local dealer.
  11. My SC400 gets about 22mpg and it has 223k miles. The only thing I did was a tune up @120K miles. I'd check the filters, tire pressure, etc... If that doesn't work I'd put it on 'puter and see what it tells you. Paul 02 SC430 00 RX300 95 SC400
  12. I had the same problem with mine as well. It was the battery posts. The metal corroded and the plastic was still keeping it in place. Good way to test it if your car is dead is to open the door and to jiggle the battery post, if the car starts beeping because your door is open than you found the problem. It may be a good idea to replace the posts, you can get it fairly cheap and do it yourself. I had a situation where it lost connection on the highway and I had to coast to the side of the road. I've also seen it take out the alternator after a while. Another test I've done is to try to boost the car. If the car doesn't boost than there's no connection. Paul 02 SC430, 95 SC400, 00 RX300
  13. This is normal. Has been going on my 95 SC400 for 200k miles, although I don't remember it on the 92 SC400 Paul
  14. I've had a similar problem with my '95 Sc400 and it turned out to be the sensor on the rear tire (I believe the ABS but not sure..was 100K miles ago). It was locking up the caliper. My .$.02. Paul
  15. I had the same issue with my SC430. I found a good shop that was able to install a set of Michelin Pilot AS tires instead of the run flats for $1000 out the door and was even cheaper than TireRack. The funny part was that the dealer didn't even have the equipment to mount run flats (Lexus of Silver Sprng MD). Instead of the spare just get AAA and they'll patch it up for you or you can wait a day or so until it's replaced, it still beats paying $300 a tire that will get you 12K miles vs $1000 a set of all season that will give you a better ride and 3x the wear.
