  1. Thanks for the reply 2XLexV8! I listened to those very same speakers in Best Buy the other day and thought that they sounded much better than the 4" Pioneers they were next to. I've been reading good things about the Inifinity 4" Kappa's though. They're more money, but I'd like to at least hear them before making a decision. Anyway, I was wondering - did you simply replace the 4 4" speakers and the sub and leave everything else alone? In other words did you have to do anything with the tweeters (disconnect?), the wiring, the amp (did you have to add another amp for the sub)? Also, did all of the speakers fit properly without having to adjust/cut/drill anything? Thanks! -Gene
  2. I've done quite a lot of searching in this forum and on the Internet in general, but could not find any answers. Any help would be appreciated: Lately (within the last few days), I've noticed that when I turn off my engine, there are loud pinging noises coming from under the hood. It lasts for quite a while (5-10 minutes). I know that cars make noises after turning off the engine due to certain parts cooling, but this noise just seems very loud and excessive. I'm not sure if it's normal or something I should worry about. Also, I do not hear the pinging noise at all while the engine is on (neither idling, nor accelerating). Thanks in advance. -Gene
  3. Sorry, disregard my last post. It seems to have been talked about at length in this post: http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index...?showtopic=4079 Here's another good discussion (although I wish there were model numbers for the speakers they mention): http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index...?showtopic=4483 I'd love to see some recommended speakers listed w/model names/numbers. Anyone? Also, the front and rear are 4" midrange. Can they be replaced by 4" 2-way or 3-way speakers? If so, how do they work in tandem with the 1" tweeters in the front? Obviously, I have never installed a car audio system before. Thanks. -Gene
  4. 2 questions: 1. Is the size of the rear speakers really 4"? When looking up my '92 SC400 at Best Buy, Crutchfield, and Circuit City, it looks like they claim the front mids to be 4", but the rear speakers to be 6" or 6 1/2". Now I know these may not be the best sources of info, but just looking at the speaker grills in my car leads me to believe that the rear speakers are indeed larger than the front. Any ideas? 2. If the amp outputs 280 watts, what peak wattage is necessary for each speaker? Is it divided by the 7 speakers, giving each one a peak of 40 watts? Or does more of the power go to certain speakers; say, the sub? Thanks in advance. -Gene
  5. Wow, thanks alot for the speedy responses! It's good to know that the majority of the minor issues I'm having are fairly common. One followup question - one response mentioned swaybar bushings as potentially being one of my problems. Does anyone know what kind of cost is associated with fixing that? Thanks again everyone! So far, I love the car despite these problems. Once fixed, it will be like driving a brand new lexus at a fraction of the price. By the way, the engine is sooo smooth. -Gene
  6. I just bought a used (2 owner) 1992 Lexus SC400 for under $5k. I thought it was in great shape and a steal at the price. I still think it's a steal, but I'm discovering little things that are wrong with it (minor annoyances): front passenger headlight has moisture, problems with stereo speakers and/or amp, cd changer works most of the time (but I get "ERR" on occasion), climate control display has blown bulbs. So, I've seen posts concerning the problems above, but I also have other problems that I have not seen discussed. Your help would be greatly appreciated (I hope this will help others who might be having the same problems): 1. Hear a scraping noise coming from below the car on the front driver's side. Only happens when hitting a bump. Sometimes the bump is not very large. I looked under the car and there is nothing out of the ordinary looking (nothing low to the ground). I really don't think I'm scraping the ground. Could this be a suspension or axel problem (I hope not!)? 2. Is the antenna supposed to retract? My antenna is perfectly straight. I can pull it out and push it in. However, I didn't even know there was supposed to be a motor, since I never hear it even try to retract or expand the antenna. Does that mean there is a motor or fuse that needs replacement? 3. Related to #2? I get HORRIBLE AM reception. FM reception is terrible as well, but not nearly as bad as AM. I'm guessing this has something to do with the antenna. 4. There are 3 spots on the driver's side where paint has started to come off. Would you recommend a new paint job for the whole car (roughly $350) or spot paint (roughly $325)? It's a very dark green. 5. There is a tear in the driver's seat. It is small - approx 2 inches. Any recommendations on how to fix? 6. There is a crack in the molding on the driver's side door right next to the window. The crack splits the molding into two pieces. The gap between the two spaces is about 1/16" to 1/8". Any ideas on how to fix? This crack causes a rattling of the faux wood trim on the door as well. 7. The trunk keyhole doesn't turn! The only way to open the trunk is to pop it open with the latch next to the driver's seat. 8. I replaced the batteries in the keys, but the range is still horrible. You practically need to be right next to the door in order for them to open. Is this normal? All of these problems seem inexpensive (save, #1). I just don't know where to start. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!! Thank you. -Gene
  7. Are there any tutorials anywhere on how to do this? I think I have read that the amp is below the CD changer in the trunk. Do I start there or do I have to test things at each speaker? Thanks in advance. -Gene
  8. I have just purchased a used '92 SC400. I recently noticed that the front driver's side speaker(s) and the rear passenger speaker(s) do not work properly. I tested this by using the balance and fade buttons. I do get muffled, low-volume sound from both the front driver and rear passenger areas, but not much. The front driver sounds like muffled low volume high freq sounds with very little if any bass sounds. The rear passenger sounds like muffled low volume low freq (bass) sounds with very little if any high freq sounds. The front passenger speaker(s) sound fine and the rear driver speaker(s) sound fine, although at higher volumes (say turning the volume knob to 50% or higher), certain low freq. sounds cause it to rattle a bit. Is that normal? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! -Gene P.S. Great forum!
