  1. So mileage wear is the sole guideline for timing belt replacement? I've got a good independent mechanic and he said the Lexus tb was a sturdy belt but he said if it was him he would replace it due to age. He does have a vested interest in his answer. He said it would be a $5-600 job. There are no leaks or odd engine noises. In doing additional belt kit searches I've found many packages available at what seems to be reasonable prices and, unless I'm reading wrong, the same tb kit fits the Toyota V8s from 1998 on. If I continue putting miles on at the same rate, it will be 2025 before it gets to 90,000 miles and I'll be 74 years young. I'd trade it but I can't find any thing new out there that comes equiped with the "paid for" option my gs has. :D
  2. Title says it all. 2000 GS400 with 50k miles that I've owned since spring 2004 and 25k mi. Garage kept and driven easily. I'm probably going to have it done but I'm interested in what the forum membership thinks? I can't remember spending any money on repairs for this car. I've had one set of brake pads and tires installed shortly after I got it and then regular oil changes and that's it. Everythin works. I do have the gurgle sound in the climate control but it's no worse than it was 8 years ago and about the only time I notice it is when accelerating from a stop when the car is cold. I'm not tired of the styling and it's as fast as it's always been. Still thrills me big time. Amazon sells this timing belt kit for $300. Timing Belt Kit Lexus GS 400 1998-2000. Includes: timing belt water pump with gasket thermostat and gasket, automatic tension adjuster timing belt tensioner timing belt idler engine accessory drive belt two camshaft seals front crankshaft seal other needed misc. gaskets and seals This kit will service Lexus GS400, with V8 1UZFE engines, year range of 1998-2000. Featuring products by Bando, Contitech, Mitsuboshi, GMB, Koyo, NTN, NSK, NPW, Paraut, Aisin. Services years: 1998, 1999, 2000. What do you think?
  3. Worked like a charm on my 96 ls400. Picked up a remote on eBay for $20 and a key from Sewell for $45 and I'm good to go.
  4. I've misplaced one of my original 1996 LS400 keys and remotes. The FCC# on my remaining remote is: HYQWDT-C / Canada 1551 K1420. The ones I see on Ebay for 95-97 LS400s look identical to mine but have different FCC#s: HYQ 1512P/Canada 1551 102 199. Will they work or do I need to find the exact FCC#? My local locksmith has security key blanks and wants $35 to cut a new key. Does that sound about right? Anyone know what a dealer would charge? I'm going to search for the lost key thru the weekend but I know how Murphy's Law works so if it doesn't turn up I'm going to get a backup set fast. If my luck runs true to form, I'll find my old set minutes after getting a new set. :cries: Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.
  5. I replaced oem Dunlops with Michelin hydroedge on gs400 and am totally satisfied.
  6. My 2000 GS400 dash is a bit dim even turned up all the way. Acceptable but not as bright as I'd like.
  7. I put Hydroedge on wifes GS400 and love them.
  8. I've bought a 2000 GS400 and a 96 LS400 on eBay and am well satisfied with both cars and saved considerable money too.
  9. Any suggestions on what to use for the little black rubber rattle reducers that go between the console lid and the console? I'm missing the front one on both sections of the center storage console on 96 ls400. I cut one out of foam and mounted it with double sided tape and then I took a pencil eraser and magic markered it black and used carpet tape but both these methods leave a bit to be desired. Do you think Lexus sells replacements and what would I ask for? Thanks.
  10. Just back from a 181 mile trip and it took 6.61 gal to fill up. Interstate running 75 mph avg. Better by about 3mpg than I expected a 96 ls400 to get.
  11. In the last 3 years I've bought 7 cars on ebay and haven't been burned yet. Deal with people with lots of feedback and get on the phone and talk to them. Keep your bs detector turned on high and if it sounds goofy or too good to be true back off. I look for ads with many detailed pictures. You've got to have broadband. Dial up won't get the pictures near quick enough. Use the ebay vin check, $15 for 10 checks. it's about as good as carfax for vehicle history. Carfax has a consumer deal of unlimited searches in a 30 day period for about $20 but you can only use that once every 6 months. I find something I like and put it in my watched file. I'll bid my max or a little less. If it doesn't sell, contact the seller and ask for best price, then negotiate. If you come to terms, seller relists it with a buy it now and you buy it. It's all about feedback and being able to judge personalities. I've bought a 2000 gs 400, a 96 ls 400, a 2000 q45 anniversary touring, an 01 q45, a 2000 isuzu Trooper limited, an 01 acura cls and a 94 gmc yukon 2 door as well as a 373v ranger bassboat. Keep your guard up but if you've got a bit of gambler or hustler in you, ebay is a valuable source due to the large and ever changing inventory. Just my 2 cents.
  12. I just put 225/60/16 Michelin Hydroedge on my GS400 and am well satisfied.
  13. I've got a black shoe polish stain on the lower potion of the glove box that I'll only make worse by continued efforts to remove. It looks like the glove box frame has an interior skin over it that screws on from inside the glove box. Any suggestions on where to buy a replacement glove box interior cover? thanks
  14. Lexus is going to repaint pillar under bumper to bumper warranty, loaner car and everything. On the 93-97 GS pillar was a replacable painted panel but on 98 up pillar is part of door frame and must be painted. Said bring it in Mon am and repair would take a couple of days.
  15. Thanks. Probably a black handled flat and a philips?
