  1. What the hell?! My 2001 GS300 has the compass and it has the ML with HID package. The official Lexus what's new about the 01 GS says that one thing that's new is the compass in the mirror. Did you buy the car used? Because maybe someone swapped out on you.
  2. My throttle position sensor went up the same way. Then it was ok. I replaced it. No problems after that.
  3. Try looking through http://www.l-tunedparts.com/ for the similar model body pieces
  4. Steering wheel can be found on EBAY. Make sure it's for 98-00 GS because the airbag is different on the 01-05. Replacement is easy. A couple of screws here and there. Steering wheel puller purchased from any parts store for very cheap. Swap over some of the guts. You're done! Sometimes you can get a used wheel with the stuff on it, so no swapping!
  5. Insurance is about the same if not a little better because it has very good safety features. I think the choice between the GS and ES is one of how much room you want inside. My wife had the 2001 ES and it was great. I bought the 2001 GS cuz I like it bigger inside and also there are more upgrades available for the GS to modify. There are almost no upgrades for the ES. You absolutely have to check the ball joints on either vehicle if you have that kind of mileage on them. That is a critical part that could end up with your wheel falling off. Maybe someone already replaced but you wouldn't know so have them checked for sure if you don't have any government required inspections of those sorts of safety things in Ontario. Good Luck!
  6. I would always put premium in the tank. I believe in the owners manual it dictates premium and only less if in an emergency temporary situation. Anything less may cause detonation and be bad for the motor. To replace timing belt is too much! They usually include it in the 90k service or something like that. I think it's around $1500 or so. You'd have to call your local Lexus dealer to get a specific quote as they all differ a little.
  7. When that happens, shift into lower gear manually and see if it goes. Maybe just the shifter not going into place.
  8. You can push on front of hood on either left or right side. It should recover by going up and then maybe a little up and down motion but not bouncy up and down. Do this on all 4 corners. Also, inspect each shock for any signs of leakage of fluid. You could also go by mileage. Around 50,000 sometimes is recommended, and it will improve your ride, but depending on your finances you may be able to go alot longer.
  9. Depends on where you live. Lots of dealers will install suspension upgrades like TRD Sportivo with sways. That would almost do it all for suspension. Don't know of anyone supercharging a GS300 or GS430. You can get some HP gains with cold air intakes.
  10. I bought all the stuff on EBAY. Eibach Springs were like 240 and the bilsteins were 475. It took awhile to decide what to do with my money. I looked into body kits, two tone leather, everything in the book. I finally decided to go with anything suspension because this is what I believe the GS lacks most. I am very happy and do not regret one penny spent on this upgrade. I did the work myself though I still need to get an alignment as when you do this the geometry of the suspension changes, thus throwing off your alignment. However I've been driving it and it's not like it's eating my tires or anything but still it is a necessity. hey man...how much did you spend cause i wanted to originally buy a new bodykit for my car but i was thinking about just dropping the car with a new suspension instead
  11. http://cgi.ebay.com/2002-LEXUS-GS-300-430-...id=p3286.c0.m14 Here is the closest to free you will probly get
  12. Halfway is good. All the way is bad. After a while of running no way is bad.
  13. I think the manual and dealer claim 90k on that one for an 01+ GS. Definitely something you don't want to wait on. If it fails, valves could hit pistons and things could get messy.
  14. I installed Eibach Springs with Bilstein Shocks. By the way, I recently read in Road & Track that the new Lotus Eagle will have Eibach Springs and Bilstein Shocks setup. :o The ride is Lexus-like with a little more harshness on bumps. The attitude is greatly improved and I was considering sway bars, but this set up is so good that I would really think twice before spending the big bucks on sways. The install was very easy. You don't even have to take apart ball joints for the front. Rear is easy too. My OEM setup had only 30k on it.
  15. http://www.lexpartsworld.com a few bucks cheaper than l-tuned
  16. If smoke turns pink, you may have a jeannie in exhaust. Make 3 wishes.
  17. That really is it in a nutshell. Do the simple things first. Put the right mixture of coolant/water in. Get a coolant hydrometer thing and check. To bleed fast you can take out thermostat, fill to top of that inlet, replace thermostat, button up, fill radiator, put cap on, fill overflow to hot level. Run car til thermostat opens and let temp get a little past that. Shut car down. You'll hear bubbling. Let cool down for a good 30 minutes to 1 hour, it will suck coolant down if there is air. Start car again and run. Definitely check for fan operation.
  18. Some common problems that I have had are more from under use. Lights that you push the button for like map lights front and rear. I have to use them once in a while or they won't turn on until you work them 10 times or so. My radio display sometimes fades out (I bought a Lexus Extended Warranty that covers that). The car sat for a long time (long story) and the rotors rusted, but even so they stop fine unless you have an emergency they vibrate. On my 98 GS I had a door module fail to turn on courtesy lights when door opened (got a used module for $75). 98 Gs again O2 sensor failed. On the 2001 a 3 yr old kid stole my keys and I was gonna be in for $1000 for a computer and $250 for each new key, but Lexus as a one time courtesy gave me the computer and just charged $100 for the labor to put it in. And I got the keys online at a Lexus dealer for a lot less than $250. Seems like on my 98 and 01 the right hand rear door handle makes a funny noise when opening. And on both the front passenger window has a bit more noise than the others. On my 98 I had the window adjusted to fix. On my 01 haven't bothered. On the 98 the Throttle Position Sensor went wacky, nothing yet on the 01. Ball joints went up on the 98 - expensive. I was afraid to do the work myself at first because of the mystery of Lexus and foreign cars, but soon found out that it is fairly easy to work on. Hey! Wake Up! :D
  19. Sounds like you're in deep. Of course you can resell for more by listing what you have had done to the vehicle so the next owner does not have to worry about those things. Instead of sinking more big bucks into it, why not use that for a nice down payment on a newer lower mileage GS ?
  20. The GS got a lot of changes in 2001. More airbags, engine cover, bigger L on front grille, compass in rear view mirror, gauge trim looks like radio face material instead of dash material, Optional Mark Levinson Radio instead of Nakamichi, Optional HID on GS300 models. Yearly cost depends a lot on driving habits, but it is very dependable. However when something goes wrong, it's expensive unless you can do it yourself.
  21. Well if it's the switch, I would try calling Billy's Used Toyota And Lexus Parts to get another one cheap as a try me. Or maybe you have a friend that would swap with you and you could see. That would be easy. http://www.billystoyotaparts.com/
  22. When it's not starting, take a spark plug wire off of a spark plug. Stick a screwdriver in it, and lay it next to some metal but not touching. Have someone crank it and look for blue spark from screwdriver to metal. Or buy a spark plug checker and hook it up to check (looks like a spark plug with a claw to attach to metal). Then if it has spark, take the air tube (accordion looking thing) off the throttle body. Spray some carburetor cleaner into the throttle body while someone cranks to see if it will start. You will be determining if there is spark in the first one, fuel in the second test.
  23. That is cool, but illegal. But then so is not having a front tag in some states, and it all depends if the officer notices it and takes the time to rid society of these heinous offenses! :D
