  1. That, my friend, is a rear main seal. Sorry. I know because mine looks EXACTLY the same!
  2. Is it possible to drain and flush the system at home? i.e. through the transmission cooler lines? I would think the old fluid could be purged while recirculating fresh T-IV fluid until it runs clean. That way there is less margin for error OR contamination. Thanks!
  3. Well, I recently replaced (in February) my '96 ES300 with a '99 AWD RX300 with 65k miles. Now, I should have stuck with my original plan of buying a Grand Cherokee Limited after my ES ate it's transmission and outed me just under 3k to fix a few years ago and NEVER should have bought the Lexus. I was drawn to the styling of the RX though. And I convinced myself that my transmission problem was a fluke in my ES...... Well, fast forward to the here and now. After putting approximately 15k miles on my truck (which was in perfect condition with service records when purchased) I have now replaced and/or currently need: strut mounts, a mass air flow sensor, a REAR MAIN SEAL, exhaust manifold, and passenger side power window motor. I was blinded by great advertising and the (false) belief that these cars are all they claim. rest assured, I will NEVER buy another Lexus product. Advertising does wonders. A friend has a '01 Cherokee Limited. Similar miles. It's faster, definitely rides better, is roomier, and has not had ANY problems. Hmmmm. "Jeep: The relentless pursuit of perfection"? Nice ring, huh? Now granted, all Lexus' do not have these above mentioned problems, but enough of them do. I expect nothing more from this post than to hopefully convince another potential buyer of not only the number of problems with these SUV's, but the SEVERITY of them, and costs to fix them. C'mon, a rear main seal??? How often do they go? AND (luckily enough), mine hasn't eaten it's transmission OR sludged up it's engine with gelled oil (that's a common engine problem, right??? ) Hell, my first car was a '84 Dodge Aries (I was then a 17 year old H.S. kid) with 145k miles on it. Never had a problem with it. If we compare and contrast, should these problems be expected, or more importantly, accepted? Buyers decide. I encourage responses to this. I am very curious what everyone thinks. I don't think I am unrealistic in my anger toward all that is Lexus.
  4. RX in NC, There are three O2 sensors on the '99. I'd assume it's the same for the '00 since very few changes were between those model years. The '99 has one sensor just below each exhaust manifold and a third one just prior to the catalytic converter. I am quite sure the front two are the exact same part. The rear one is different however. The front is the easiest to see as it's right under the hood downward of the exhaust manifold. It is angled slightly toward the drivers side of the vehicle. Hope that helps.
  5. Does anyone know where I can track down that DIY on this? Thanks!
  6. Hi all, I have a 99 RX300 with just under 90k on her. recently, I've been getting a muffled knock/thud/click sound from the front end. I *think* it's more localized around the passenger side, but hard to tell. This could be while turning in either direction, accelerating, or decelerating. It's an equal opportunity knock! I have also gotten it while parked and turning the wheel. It's incredibly annoying and I'm at a loss. I've been under it and everything is tight as far as I can see. No abnormal tire wear either. Anyone have any ideas? I'm at a complete loss. :chairshot: Thanks for your time! Eric
  7. I thoroughly cleaned my MAF with contact cleaner and light compressed air after a P1071 code came up. It's been well over 2k miles and no problems since. Props to JPI for helping me out with the problem.
  8. I have the same problem with the same speaker. My system is the Lexus Premium. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
  9. I recently also had the same code popping up. After lots of running around blind, I was informed by JPI that it's the MAF, and that they don't need to be *replaced* as often as one thinks, but merely cleaned. I removede mine and carefully cleaned it with contact cleaner and light compressed air. It's been around 5k since the cleaning miles and still no bothersome light!
  10. Autozone will pull the codes for you, free of charge.
  11. Autozone offers several different O2 sensors. They do offer the Bosch sensors, which are OE replacements....For around four bills a piece. They also carry Beck/Arnley sensors. These are right around $100 a piece. These are universal sensors that don't plug right in. You'd need to hack the connector off the OLD O2 sensor and wire it to the butt connectors on the new ones. The RX sensors have 4 wires each, and the Beck/Arnley puppies don't have wiring diagrams included. Be forewarned be4 you buy 'em if you DO wanna go that route. The wire colors do NOT match up.
  12. Hi all, I'm just writing to let everyone know the P0171 code problem I had is now fixed. I PM'd JPI and based on the little amount of information I was able to provide him, he quickly diagnosed my problem. My assumption that the O2 sensors were bad was totally wrong. After having me check for intake/exhaust leaks, JPI stated the MAF sensor was bad and that the older RX's had issues with them. Well, he was correct and I now have put several hundred miles on the car since fixing the MAF and the light remains off and the hesitation it had is now gone. If anyone has any questions, trust his input! Thanx JPI!!!
  13. I have a 1999 RX300 where the light just recently came on. I'm getting a P0171 code. The car has just under 80k on it, so I'm thinking the O2 sensors are crapping out. That code is bank one. That's the BACK bank, correct? Is it a safe bet to just swap out the O2 sensors, considering the mileage? ANY info would be hepful. Thanks!!!
