  1. It is so much easier and quicker to give them away rather than trying to sell them or have them taking up space in my garage for the next 5 years. JimA
  2. Anybody need a set of front floor mats for their 1st generation LS400? I bought a new set for my 94 and have an extra set of front mats. First "I'll take them!" gets them for the cost of shipping, which shouldn't be more than $15 via UPS. I live in KC. Color is Taupe? They look more red/purplish to me. They are factory Lexus mats.
  3. I was talking this evening with a friend who has a little experience with auto AC. He said the clutch could be out, causing the bearing rattle I am hearing and that it does not engage the compressor, so the compressor does not spin, making the computer believe it is locked up. He suggests I replace the clutch first and if that doesn't work replace the compressor. I know it may being doing the work twice, but if it fixes the problem, I'll save some substantial coin.
  4. Given it was a sudden failure (literally went from working great to broken), do you think I may have better odds of having a cleaner system? Or am I reaching here? How difficult is it to purge the system? I'm guessing that has to be done at the time the unit is installed and by a shop?
  5. Here's what I know: AC was working fine until Thursday night. Air was real cold and no noise was coming from the engine compartment. On Thursday night, the control panel for the AC as well as the AC went dead. The outside temperature was not showng on the dash either. The next morning when I started the car I noticed a never before heard noise coming from the engine compartment. It was fairly loud so I stopped and opened the hood to narrow where it may be coming from. It seemed to be coming from the area around the compressor. The noise seemed to get quieter as I drove more. It never did totally go away. There was also a slight odor coming off the motor as well. It wasn't electrical, more of a burnt rubber smell but not like burning tire smell. I got to work and replaced the fuse for the HVAC and tested it out. The controls are back up but the AC light flashes and I no longer get any cold air. I still get what I call a 'bearing rattle' from the compressor area. It has been mentioned before about replacing the AC clutch. Since I had cold air before this happened and given the symptoms I've described, do y'all think I have the same problem? I've torn into a few motors in my day and have a much better than average set of tools. Is this something a do it yourselfer can do or am I asking for trouble? Money is a bit tight for me right now and I've been given a phone quote of over $1300 to replace the compressor. If it is only the clutch, I'd rather just replace that. TIA, JimA I really appreciate any advice anyone can offer.
  6. I put the interior back together tonight. I only ended up with two extra screws. For the life of me I don't know where they go. It had to be somewhere in the console. It is the only part that had screws in the dissassembly. The car looks great now. The carpet has no stains that are visible and the seats are much cleaner. I bought a new set of floormats as well. If anybody needs a set of front mats you can have my old set for shipping. They aren't in bad shape and should clean up nicely. JimA
  7. These would be towels out of my own linen closet. My mother lives about 15 miles away. JimA
  8. What sort of dinosaur was it? Seriously now, have you gotten it back together and smelling sweet yet? It is an orange T-Rex. I'll post a picture when I get a chance. I might even replace the army man (paratrooper) I have hanging from the rear view mirror with it. The carpet is STILL drying out. The carpet itself is dry but there is still some water in the foam padding on the back side. We are getting some warm dry weather this week so it should be good to go by Friday evening. I'll put it back together then. I really don't have a choice. I need the car for work next week and my mother will need her's back when she returns from vacation. JimA
  9. I bought my 94 LS about 6 weeks ago. The car is great. Only issue has been the cigarette odor in the interior. Today I took some steps to help that. I pulled my seats and the carpet. I sprayed the carpet with commercial carpet cleaner (the type you use on your home carpet), power washed it clean, then repeated the process, this time using Simple Green. I have the carpet hanging on the clothesline now drying out. I'll wait a few days before re-install it. After pulling the rear seats, I found about $3 in change, some costume jewelry, one Cheerio and a plastic dinosaur. SCORE! Next is the seats. I did the scrubdown with the Woolite solution. I'll take some Lexol to them tomorrow after they have had ample time to dry out. I have about a week to do all of this as I have my mother's car while she is on vacation. I'd really like to re-dye the seats while they are out of the car, but that'll have to wait for another day. I'll spray the headliner with Febreeze to help with the odor. I'm even thinking of running the air and spraying some Febreeze into the plenum where the cabin filters go, since I have access to it right now. Anybody have any other suggestions while I have the interior apart? JimA
  10. Here you go. JimA http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index...showtopic=29381
  11. Yes, on the 93-94 there are two. they are mounted side by side. There is a tutorial over in the workshop tutorial section titled 'How to remove cabin air filters'. JimA
  12. I know this topic has been brought up quite a bit before, and I have searched and read everything I can. My 94 LS 400 is in desperate need of new cabin air filters. I found them online for $36 shipped. One thing I have not been able to tell from either any of the posts here or from the online retailers is if the filters come as a set of one or two? Also, are the OE filters carbon filters? Now that I have seen the filters up close, $36 seems awful expensive for only one of these. I'm planning on rodering from Park Place Lexus. Item Number MSRP Core Price Price 8888050010 $44.23 $0.00 $36.71 FILTER & ACCESSORY A THanks in Advance. JimA
  13. I use Sonus products on my vivid black Harley. Very nice. JimA
  14. My 'New' 94 LS400 has the light always on feature as well. I tried the wire dance several times to no avail. One thing that did happen that was not mentioned in the tutorial was that during the sequence the cruise light would come on. At the final stage the the cruise and ABS light would flash in a quick wig-wag motion. The Air bag light would flash slowly twice and then stay on. Is it probable that I have more problems than code 41 being set? I'd rather fix it (cheaply if I can) rather than resort to the tape fix. TIA, JimA
  15. Man, that is one long sentence. ;)
  16. Yes it does seem to be the interior motor. If I get a chance tomorrow I'm going to remove the cabin air filters to see what kind of shape they are in. On another note, the previous owner was a smoker. What should I use to remove the odors? I don't want to cover it up with another odor, just want to remove it. JimA
  17. I drove to Pratt KS yesterday from KC for work. I just bought my 94 this past Saturday so this was my first daytrip in the car. I filled up in Wichita on the way back. The car averaged 25 mpg on the inagural tank. This was with 89 octane fuel. I filled up with 91 octane and will fill up on the way to work today so I can compare performance. The only rub was when I got back into the car in the afternoon and the AC fan kicked into high speed, it made more noise than I expected. It sounded like the fan was off balance a bit, and made a loud off-balance humming sound. One of the things I'm going to check is the cabin air filters to see what kind of shape they are in. I will say that the AC was set for outside air and I never even got so much as a wiff of the oilfields/refinery in Eldorado KS. That alone is impressive if you've ever driven by a oilfield/refinery. JimA
  18. they did a feature this past weekend on Motorweek. the car has sonar and when the cruise is engaged, it senses the speed of the car in front of you and slows you down if you get too close. Won't be long before it'll steer for you as well. JimA
  19. Are those 17 or 18 inch? Great looking car. JimA
  20. Been looking at that site pretty hard actually. If it weren't for that site I may not have bought the car. I'm a pretty fair shadetree mechanic and am not intimidated by much. Having the tutorials put me over the edge. One thing I didn't find on it was remote programming instructions. Where can I find those? JimA
  21. Greetings all! New LS400 owner here. It is a 94 w/144k on the clock. I've been reading posts for about a week now and trying to soak in as much info as I can. The car is in pretty good shape. Runs and rides great. The timing belt/water pump has been done as well as a new PS pump. The instrument panel was repaired about a year ago. The owner gave me a set of brake pads that need to be installed. I've ordered a new antenna mast, and am researching the climate control LCD fix. these are the big issues. I also am in need of a cup holder cover. The car is a joy to drive compared to my Exploder. I'll be taking it on a 600 mile roadtrip this Tuesday. We'll see what kind of MPG I can expect then. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. JimA
  22. I'm thinking of doing the same thing with my 94. THe chrome factory wheels have seen better days. I was thinking of going 17 or 18 inch on it. Any similar recommendations? THanks JimA
  23. Do you have a picture of a new filter next to the old one? Are the new one's white? JimA
