  1. I live in NYC and need to find a good/cheap reliable mechanic for my '99 GS300. Also, does anyone in the Manhattan and Brooklyn area own an OBD II reader? I want to get my car scanned but don't want to pay the $90+ prices shops/service centers are charging in Manhattan. Please let me know. I would also like to know if there are any GS owners in Brooklyn who would like to meet up to clean/maintain/detail/upgrade their cars. It's easier to have someone who owns a GS also to do this with. Thanks. My email is law.victor@gmail.com if anyone would like and can offer help with GS maintance.
  2. How often should the GS300's engine air filter be replaced? I have a '99 GS300 and I called Lexus of Bayridge and was told every 5000 miles. That, however, seems a bit absurd. Let me know. Thanks. Also, could a dirty engine air filter cause low idle and the check engine light to come on?
  3. My check engine light came on, so I brought my '99 GS300 to have it diagnosed. It turns out there was a problem with the MAF sensor. I have changed it since then and the car ran fine for a while. The check engine light just came back on yesterday after two good weeks with it off. So, I was wondering could a dirty filter cause the check engine light to come on. I will be changing my engine air filter today to see if that helps.
  4. Hey, really nice exhaust tips! Where did you find these?
  5. Are you still selling your GS430? If you are I would love to look at it. I've been trying to find one with low miles that I can keep for more than a year as I rack up about 15,000 miles in a little over half a year. Let me know. Thanks.
  6. Anywhere between 1.5 - 2 U.S. gallons when the 'fuel' light first comes on from my experence. How 'FULL' do you fill your car? ;) I can get about 2 1/2+ gallons more after the 'trigger' stops on my ES........right up to the top of the fuel 'neck' which isn't good really to fill it that much. B) ← Also, the needle does not touch the letter "E" yet when the light comes on. There's still a wedge to go before it hits it. I wonder how accurate that needle is in our GS's?

B) ← I stop fueling once the gas pump clicks off. After which, it clicks off right away again if I try to fill it up some more; but 2.5 gallons more is a lot.
  8. Hey, Does anyone know how many gallons we have left in the GS when the needle is on empty. I called Lexus and they said we have about 1 gallon left but that can't be right as when I fill up with the needle on 'E' I only put in about 16 gallons. The tank capacity is supposed to be 19.8.
  9. This is a multi-question post. Please be patient and thanks for any responses. Also, I currently own a '99 GS300. I'm debating whether I should get winter tires or just good all season tires. I've never driven in snow before, so I'm not sure how well the GS handles in it? Does it need winter tires or are all season good enough with the VSC? Also how well does the VSC work? I haven't had too much experience with it either. The snow tires I have been thinking about buy are as follow: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?ti...Winter+Sport+M3 These are supposed to be pretty good. My friend put these on a STi and it handled great; much better than some Continental snow tires another STi owner put on. As for the all-season tires, I was thinking about getting the Michelin Pilot A/S. Here's a link from TireRack.com: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?ti...lot+Sport+A%2FS Good reviews and good traction all around.
  10. Does anyone know how to torque bolts/screws to a specific torque? Is there a machine for that? As I need to torque my oil pan plug screw back to 49 nm or mn. Let me know.
  11. Thanks SKPerformance. I'm a newbie when it comes to cars so do you know where I could get instructions to clean the throttle body? I'm trying to learn how to maintain my car myself; I greatly appreciate the relevant comments posted like yours.
  12. I read that a loose vacuum line can cause the low idle that I am experiencing. Approximately 350-400 rpm when stopped at a red light in Drive. Lex, what do you think? Where are the vacuum lines?
  13. Does anyone know of a good mechanic in NYC for Lexus? I might need a transmission flush. My GS300 shifts rougher now that I have 87k miles on it. Also, when i step on the gas there seems to be very LITTLE POWER until 2k RPM. At about 2k revs the car pulls harder as if I just started stepping on the gas. From a red light though some times the car feels like it's barely moving until 2k, sometimes the same happens from a rolling start. Has anyone experience this?
  14. It seems that the joints/hinges in the driver and passenger seat need some oil. I have a 99 GS300. Does anyone know how to remove the seat back so that I can get silicone lube in there? I've been looking every where on line for a diagram of the seat's screws/bolts or whatever is holding it down to of no avail. Also, does anyone notice little noises in their cars when driving... they annoy the hell out of me! There's a little tapping noise - not consistent - in my sunroof sliding cover. I've investigated it but I have not been able to locate the loose part. Any ideas?!?
  15. Here are a few questions: I have a '99 GS300 with about 88k miles on it. I just changed the drive belt by myself seeing that it was cracking. When does Lexus recommend the Timing belt be changed? When should I flush my transmission? ... change my brake line fluid? ... change my power steering fluid (is that even necessary)? What needs to be done at 90K miles? Thanks to all the regulars and everyone else who provide fellow Lexus drivers with your knowledge!
  16. Hey, I've had the same problem before; however, my rattle was more significant when I first started the car. I would also hear the same rattle when I would accelerate fast. It turned out that the heat shield on my exhaust was starting to rust off and became notably loose. All you have to do is get underneath the car and cut it off after you locate the loose one. The heat shield is just a covering for the exhaust pipe. It comes in two piecies that are held together by bolts. Mine rusted so badly that I had to cut the bolts to remove the cover. Let me know what happens with yours. It sounds like you are having the same problem as I did. I hope it's an easy fix.
  17. Hi all, I was wondering if the steering in your GS300s gets loose at speeds above 60 mph. My steering wheel becomes very loose and this is concerning me. Is this normal for the GS? If not, what could be causing the very light steering? I greatly appreciate all of the responses I have been getting. Many of them are very helpful. THANKS GUYS!
  18. Hi all, I was just wondering how many miles you get per gallon on your GS300s. I have a 1999 GS300 and only get about 250 per gallon. Let me know what's the norm and if I can increase that! I HAVE TO DRIVE 100 MILES TO WORK EVERYDAY!!! Thanks in advance.
