Spyware Removal Help

ok. im not too tech savvy when it comes to spyware removal. i downloaded something that i detected had spyware on it. so i quickly deleted it, checked for spyware, did virus scan, and there's this one spyware still stuck in my computer..

"New.Net Domains"... its stuck in my computer. i checked the installed programs, and it was there so i clicked "uninstall" but it still shows up on my list! im doin a spyware run, and it still shows up even after i try removing it...

any advice for a computer amateur like me? :(

i want to get rid of it asap. thanks

Try Spyware Doctor and Norton Security Scan I've read that they work.

Uncheck what you don't want and install.

If you know the name of the file go to Start>Search>All Files and Folders and type in the file name. Then when the search is complete Delete the file and any associations. Or download http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

If you know the name of the file go to Start>Search>All Files and Folders and type in the file name. Then when the search is complete Delete the file and any associations. Or download http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

I've used these two for many years. I run them at least once a week. They have "free" versions that you will manually have to perform the "updates". The pay-for versions will also dynamically monitor for spyware plants. I run these two because one may not catch what the other will.

Thanks for the advice guys! I forgot to mention that I am using the Windows Defender and Spybot. Here's the weird thing.

Last night, I ran a virus scan with my Norton 360, spybot, and Windows Defender like 4 times. The results were:

Those 4 times I got "newdotnet" come up on spybot, "freeze" 2 times on spybot

I'm guessing the same items on Defender because i didnt check what defender found. Anyways the 3rd and 4th time on Defender returned no threats.

Norton on all 4 scans returned with 6 risks but just one was fixed.

This morning I'm running all three again and so far my spybot returned with no threats. Defender's still running and so is Norton.

Last night I did trace the newdotnet and freeze. Problem is i couldnt delete the "registry" items from newdotnet but i was able to delete two files of it. i cant remember if i found the freeze one, but its gone now.

Do you think i can rest easy now?

Sometimes, old invalid registry entries (that point to uninstalled programs that had spyware) are detected. The registry maintains an entry on EVERYTHING you've ever installed. I use regclean fromM$.

MS included it with old 9X o.s. I use it on XP without a hitch. Couldn't find it on M$ website, but it is here:

then to 'defrag' the registry, you could use this:

Also, search the term ' alexa' which is an M$ tracking cookie which shows up on scans as well.

edit: while I was searching links for you, you posted the registry question. Try the above and let us know....

Also type in google " free system scan". I think symantec has one for free that does it over the web. The advantage is that you're using an updated database. Takes a long time tho.

I couldn't quite understand your advice. So if I found those registry stuffs again, i should defrag it?

But here's my question now. I ran spybot, norton 360, and Windows Defender this morning and all 3 returned with NO THREATS. Do you guys think I finally got rid of it from my computer system?

Btw, i'm running Vista, if that matters. hehe :P Sorry I'm not a total genius when it comes to computers and laptops :)

Hi im a newbie from LOC UK....just started reading this post....

Im using KASPERSKY internet security..SPYBOT S&D...and SPYWARE DOCTOR......have found all of these work excelent with my laptop running VISTA dont conflict at all with each other and they get rid of ( if any get on my laptop ) all spyware etc....

just think these are great products for PC security and spyware removal... :)

This is what I understand... if any computer gurus out there wish to correct me, feel free....

The spyware or adware are planted on your computer, usually from the web. They are data miner bugs, mining data. Some are malicious - looking for SS numbers or Credit Card numbers. Most are just watching your key strokes and where you've been on the net. The bad thing is these little bugs will slow down your connection to the internet while they are "reporting" back what they find.

Viruses, trojans, worms, etc. are different, and as you probably know, can be very destructive.

I've had a Spybot error, while scanning, stop at two places with an error message regarding trojans.sbi and trojanc.sbi. I cannot fix these two errors which stop Spybot scanning, then I click OK and it goes to the next error message and stops scanning and reports the trojanc.sbi error. Does anyone know what is causing this and how to fix it???

I also run RegCure. My Norton Anti-virus cannot find any problems.

What happens after you finish the scan? Are there options for removing the trojans? It could be that your Spybot has been corrupted, in which case you'll have to re-install. Also try Lavasoft as Randy&Bonnie and DC have mentioned. Much better than Norton at detection. I would also make sure you aren't using the buit in Windows firewall but something like ZoneAlarm which prevents the unauthorized export of data or connection from your computer to the internet. Also set your firewall's internet security to maximum protection. If your computer is operating slower than before, it's a good sign you've got active spyware. Depending on the firewalls (software/hardware) you're using, they may or may not be connecting, but they will be trying, which creates the slowdown. In future, make sure your downloads have been cleared of spyware by any of the recognized authorities and download from safe sites only. Don't click on any links in emails you're not familiar with. Better still, don't open emails from strangers. When visiting a new site from a referral, type in the address rather than clicking on the link. There are many phishing sites that mask their address and can emulate ligitimate sites' graphics. When you've entered one of these sites, just clicking on an interesting link can download trouble onto your computer. One telltale sign that you're in their domain is that after clicking on a link, nothing happens. Most of the anti spyware software have subscription based versions that give you live monitoring/protection. Pay close attention to your I.E. security settings - what you're enabling. I would enable - the phishing filter, disable the running of ActiveX without prompting you first, etc. Something else you should do is make sure you've disabled sharing your drives/folders/files. Sounds like a steep learning curve if you're not familiar with computer-internet security issues, but it takes only one viral infection that wipes out your hard drive or corrupts all of your important data to make educating yourself worthwhile. Only problem is, at that point it's too late.

once you get your system back in order, get a copy of "rollbackRX". It'll take an image of your system "just as it is". So whether you erased your operating system, or simply get a virus, it'll restore every thing ... roll it back to just as it was. The software runs quick, is not memory intensive, and you can set it up to image (in less than 10 seconds) as many times as you want ... whether a dozen times per day, or once a month. It doesn't require an emergency CD to run it either. good luck!

tools->options->security->custom->scroll down and disable everything except popup blocker and downloads, disable user data persistance, enable anon login. Default M$ settings are not your friend.

Some content will be blocked on certain sites. That is a good sign. Also, do NOT use windows messenger. Full of vulnerable code. All of this is for XP SP2.

Go to adv. settings and untick: allow animations, allow sounds, active content, anything 'active', install on demand, check for updates, 3rd party extensions, allow software to run/ install if signiture is invalid, search from address bar.

tick: empty ie files, do not save encrypted pages, use ssl2.0 and 3.0, transistions.

That should get you started, and it's late and I have missed a few I'm sure, but you get the idea. M$ default settings are NOT what you want. You will be suprised what you can do with all of the 'lowered' settings.

Your main culpriit is anything 'Active'. Allowing those settings will open you up to all manor of bugs, viruses, trojans, worms, etc. It's vulnerable code. You don't need the active content anyway, and the sites which require it are just the ones you want to stay away from.

Download and install: quickset internet. It is a small app that gives one click access to security settings once you are inside a trusted site. Then you can lower settings, then change back easily.

Also look for a little app called windowcide.

Excellent program.

Type symantic virus scan into google. They will scan you over the net free, and check up on your trojans for you.

Good free service. Well, used to be anyway. Try it.

Do the reg clean thing as well.

Aok has covered a lot of the important aspects. I would be very carefully cleaning the registry. At the very least, never allow any program to run the reg clean on auto. Do it manually to check every item before deleting. If you mess up - big headaches.

By the way, this thread reminded me to run adaware, and spybot. Haven't run em for a month or more. Adaware (lavasoft) found 1 item. It was the alexa 'phone home' cookie from uncle bill.

That's it.

Nothing else from either program.

I run NO antivirus.

What did I say about I.E security settings?

Oh, also disable windows media player (go into settings and disable everything- yes everything- but you will still have use of the codecs), and install media player classic, and 'orbit' DLM so you can still download those naughty youtube videos....
