Power Steering Hose Problem (help)

Hi, i'm new here so sorry if this is made in the wrong area..

I have a '91 LS400 that was givin' to me as my first car years ago, about early last year my car died on me and i'm no mechanic i know very little about cars from the mechanic side. I have a friend who is real good with them and he found out that my power steering hose had a leak and he called around and a dealership told hiim that that particular model/year had a problem with the power steering hose leaking into the alternator. I had the alternator replaced and a few weeks ago the same thing happened.

I just got a new alternator but i'm having trouble finding a power steering hose. Does anybody know where i can find one or a way i can repair the old one and perhaps how i can prevent this from happening again?

There are several "hoses" on the pump. Which are you referring to? The high-pressure line, which many people, including myself, frequently refer to as a hose. It is actually a metal tube so that is probably not a very good term to use as it confuses people. Those cost around $150. If you are referring to the actual rubber hoses, like the return hose, you can buy those by the foot at most auto parts stores. The cost is usually about $1.50 per foot.

Are you sure that the leak is coming from a "hose" and/or even a high pressure line and that..that is all you need to replace?...I ask this because I think that the most common leaks are from the power steering pump "seal".....you can find many posts about his particular problem...I would really suggest for you to just do a little more research before you spend your money.

Hey, thanks to both of you for responding, i'll find out more and let my friend know and find out, but i believe it was the pressure hose that thomas referred too.

Soon as i find out more info i'll post back, and in case it is the pressure hose, do you know of a reliable website that sells it?

Your powersteering leak probably took out the alternator...They have a tendancy to leak right onto the alternator...

Remove the leaking hose...If it a standard rubber hose with no special fitting on the ends just take the hose into any autoparts store and they will cut you one to fit...Very cheap and effective...If it a pressure hose with special fitting then call around or go to the dealer and get reamed.... The pressure hose costs around $400 at the dealer. They are hard to find online. The best place to look for a cheaper one is probably local auto recycler.

The high pressure hose for a 91 LS is $361.34 at Park Place Lexus (Plano, Texas) when purchased online.
