Clear Corners/headlights For 1st Gen Gs300

Recommended Posts

:cries: I've been looking now for nearly 3 weeks nonstop for clear cornered headlights for the 1st gen gs300 or at the very least, a detailed mod on how to get rid of the amber insert in the headlight corner. I've scoured these forums and many others for many different types of cars just to get an idea for how to do the mod or find someone that produces the headlight completely clear. I HAVE FOUND NOTHING!!! people mention that "they've seen this" or "its easy, just search" but i've looked at thousands of posts and hundreds of websites and have found no links.

The closest i've found for clear headlights are the JDM option for the JZS147 chassis which still has an amber interior, not just the bulb as i previously thought. As to mods, I've found es300 guides to taking out the amber insert, but i wanted to know if it was the same or similar for the gs300 (because i have learned the hard way that many things between different lexus' are not interchangable or even similar). :chairshot:

Has anyone done this and done it properly?

Does anyone have a definitive link to a site that can show how to properly do the mod?

HAS ANYONE FOUND ANY MANUFACTURER THAT MAKES HEADLIGHTS (aftermarket) FOR THE FIRST GEN GS!? the sticky for body kits says there is one but the picture isn't viewable and there is no link!

This is my first lexus and i don't want to take my headlight apart and in the process mess it up completely.

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! i'm frustrated due to the amount of time i've wasted on the computer looking that i could use on my car fixing/modding...

Can't be that difficult, I have seen posts where the lights were taken apart and the amber lens was actually broken up then removed. I think the guy used a long chisle of sorts and broke them out.

??? Then that guy was NUTS!!!

Lift the hood, unscrew the lights, take them out, yatta yatta yatta yatta yatta yatta yatta yatta yatta yatta, go to hell :D

I wasn't joking, I hope you are. Not very nice telling someone to go to hell :chairshot:

lol, man here,

Well my original intent for this thread was to see if someone could post a guide on how to mod the light, even though modding it is the last thing i want to do. I've tried finding aftermarket lights for the 1st gen gs but all aftermarket manufacturers and ebay seem to think it doesn't exist and everything starts with the mk2 Gs...:(

Posts on this site have alluded to a UK set of lights for the GS, but i have yet to see a picture or a link. Other posts have indicated that Kazz sports had clears, but i went there and even emailed them and they don't have them either...

Everything seems to need to be custom made for this car, and while i find myself rather handy and quick to learn, i don't believe i'm anywhere near skilled enough to do all the things i want to do with this car...

no those are the JDM headlights, the ones that come with the aristo. Those were the ones i was going to get but i found out the amber inside the headlights is not limited to the bulb, but is actually a cone inside the headlight. but again, if someone knows how to safely get rid of the amber inside, i'll get the JDM (even though they're expensive) and do that.

for the record, i hate amber in my headlights if that wasn't already apparent...

i have the USDM ones, which have the amber as a large piece that can be seen on the outside face of it. ill post a picture soon.

the jdm lights are a step up from the USDM ones because they don't have the amber on the outside, they're understated. i'll go with these if i can't find clears, but i know people have done it before! i've looked around cardomain and people have customized those lights and made them all clear!

i want to know how they've done it, its driving me crazy...

speaking of which, on a side note, if anyone wants to trade my USDM for your JDM headlights, i'm fair game.

there are tons a guys who want to trade their JDM lights for USDM ones here in Canada. I'm sure you will find a few guys in the WTB section. if not there then maybe Club Lexus.

Here in Canada a lot of importers are bringing in Aristos but in order to legalize them they have to have the USDM headlights because they are DOT approved.

Oh and FYI both USDM and JDM headlights you have heat the edge and take the lens cover off. Once that is done you car remove the orange relector on the USDM. And if you have the JDM ones once you take the cover off you will notice there is a small orange housing around the bulb. You can take that off too once the lens cover has been removed.

When using a heat gun to melt the glue be very careful no to leave it there too long also dont try to pry off parts that are not heats or you will be looking for a new set of lights.

insomniac,

have you yourself done this? i just want to be sure, because everyone i've spoken to so far only knows through hearsay. the amber in the headlights are not part of the mold, but are actual pieces that can be taken out? I don't mean to second guess, but i'm just making sure.

and thanks for the info on the usdm/jdm switch, ill probably be doing that.

Yes I am 100% positive. Now after you take the cover off. You will notice that there is 2 clips on the top of the reflector on and 2 on the bottom or 1 (I cant remember) the reflector inside the USDM you might have to crack the reflector part into 2 pieces in order to get it out. but that shouldn't be a problem if you dont want them anyways.

If you are converting to the JDM headlights please note that the bulb and socket that goes inside the housing for the turn signal are different. If you buy JDM ones make sure it at least come with the socket. The wiring you can just modify.

Now on the USDM ones between the turn signal and the low beam there is a narrow section that looks light it should illuminate in some way but no. its just a useless hallow section of the headlight to fool everyone (if you look on the back of that section you will notice there is no hole in the rear for a bulb). However on the JDM one that part of the headlight actually lights up. So if you buy JDM lights make sure it Also come with this socket if you plan to use it.

PS: wear latex gloves. You're gonna get a sh!tload of black weather sealant on your fongers and clothes from removing the covers and that !Removed! is damn near impossible to get off.

Getting the cover off is the hardest part. Once thats off you'll see exactly what i mean and the rest should be a breeze. Make sure to buy some of that black weather sealant when you put the housing back together. Any air hold leaks will cause condensation inside the housing and will be all foggy.

However if this whole time u were talking about complete clear lens covers like these. These are custom modified factory ones and i have no clue how its done

wow, those clear lights in the pic are exactly the ones i've been trying to find. I've been playing with the notion of modding the lights because i couldn't find those...

No idea where to find those custom lights? they look like they're made of glass, not plastic. hmmm...

and Insomniac, thanks for all that info, i'll def try it out and post a pic guide on how to do it.

some questions though, what happens if the black weather sealant gets on the headlights while doing this?

would you suggest heating the lights in an oven as the proper method, or a heat gun?

And so to continue the thread, HAS ANYONE SEEN THE LIGHTS POSTED ABOVE AND HOW TO: A) MOD EXISTING LIGHTS TO LOOK LIKE THAT or B) KNOW OF A MANUFACTURER THAT SELLS LIGHTS LIKE THIS or C) JUST KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THESE LIGHTS

ps, i love the forums...

when you take the cover off. On the black back housing you will notice a groove where the clear part fits into. you fill that area back up before putting the cover back. it is possible to clean off if you spill a little but its very gooy and will need some good elbow grease to get off.. but can be done. but if you get it on your clothes.... well...they're done
