aggiecarpenter
I have a 1996 LS 400 with 82 K original miles. It runs great, but my only complaint is a strange noise I hear when I turn the car off. For about 3 minutes after I turn the car off, there is a strange whining or moaning noise coming from the engine compartment. Its sounds like it is coming from the radiator or transmission cooler. The sound is intermittent and happens every 5 seconds or so and last about 1 second. The time between the sounds increases until it ceases. Has any one else heard of this problem? Please help! SW03ES
My guess is its normal cooling of the engine components.
aggiecarpenter
My guess is its normal cooling of the engine components. It is almost like a loud buzzing sound. I find it hard to believe that it is just cooling noises. It is VERY noticeable.

Harky
My 96 does the same thing...wierd moaning noises for about 30mins after driving. I tracked it down to coolant overflow (expansion) thru the radiator cap into the reservoir. Good call Thermactor.

Thermactor
Any old radiator cap from a store will fit. Hell, I'm running a Stant on mine right now. I had the same problem. It made funny noises but I traced it down to the rad cap, bam, no more noise. The old one had cracked rubber seals.

vacation
My '96 LS400 does the exact same thing....it's really quite annoying. Next time I can, I'll check after I shut the car down and listen for the noise by the rad cap. Although, I just replaced the cap as a matter of routine a year or so ago. I guess I'll replace it again, or maybe try to clean it real well first since it is still relatively new - one year. Love this forum. aggiecarpenter
Just wanted to update the post. Turns out that my new rad cap did not fix the noise. I took my car in to fix a couple of other issues and the shop brought to my attention that the car had the wrong kind of coolant - green instead of silica free red. Now the noise really is gone. Could the wrong coolant in the radiator make these noises?
