Rx 300's Manufactured After July 2001

Thanks for all your responses regarding my post on the 1999 AWD RX 300. As a result of your experiences/advice and after much consideration, I decided against purchasing the car.

After doing a lot of research here, I saw that Lexus changed the transmission on RX's manufactured after July 2001. So, if we still want to get an RX 300, would you consider a 2001/2002 2WD RX 300 manufactured after that date "a safe bet?" Are the chances of it lasting 200,000+ miles (with all scheduled maintenance of course) pretty strong and much better than the 1999-2001 models?

Will the oil/sludge issues still be a factor in these later models? When I asked a Lexus rep about the sludge issues regarding the 1999, he said it was mainly a problem with cars on the East Coast. He said, because we're in LA and the climate is so different, it won't really be an issue. What do you think about the validity of that statement?

Unfortunately, there are too many things I like about the car, however, I'm looking for peace of mind and don't want to have to constantly worry about the transmission failing. I've never had this type of problem with any car I've owned.

So, if we're determined to get one, at the LOWEST price possible, but also considering the reliability factor, what would you suggest?

I had a 2003 AWD rx300 and it's transmission started to have the same symptoms as my 1999 AWD rx300 did, at only 75,000 miles.

If i were you, try to find a 2001 - 2002 Rx300 with front wheel drive. You will not regret it. The rx300 is an excellent car besides the all wheel models.

I Suggest the Toyota 4Runner or RX300 Two wheel drive. The 4Runner is bulletproof and been shown to be very reliable.

I would not suggest a toyota highlander considering it has the same tranny as the rx300.

The 4RUNNER is another great choice.

there is old saying 5 % of the people have 95% of the problems. I had a 2001 that I returned with 88k miles and that thing was running great to the end. I was just ready for the change.

Regardless of the year of RX you choose......I would make sure ALL service records are accounted for (including ALL oil changes & tranny fluid changes). I wouldn't worry about the engine sludge problem this way, & have the vehicle properly inspected by your mechanic first before making your decision. If the dealer or seller does not want you to have it inspected, RUN.......don't walk away from the deal. ;) B)

I have a 2001 RX 300 with 48K. It has been performing perfectly since I bought it as the second owner with 36K. The only thing you have to worry about is the vehicles tramsmission as this is the biggest problem area with the RX. I changed the transmission fluid (myself) as soon as I got it.
