This is what is in the 2002 ES manual.

Fuel selection:

Select premium unleaded gasoline with an Octane Rating of 91 (Research Octane Number 96) or higher for optimum engine performance. However, if such premium type cannot be obtained, you may temporarily use unleaded gasoline with an Octane Rating as low as 87 (Research Octane Number 91)

your gas milage is probably because your egr set of the cel which is stuck closed

so it is not a gas issue but it is an egr problem which would rectify your issue

the problem is carbon from running cheap gas has clogged it and it needs to be cleaned out

The wording was changed in the '03-'04 manual as you can see above. ;)
