  1. Ls models that do have an A/C air filter... Open the glove box and at the top back of the box is a removeable panel of about 2 inches high by 10 inches wide. Remove this panel and then with a flashlight you can see the panel, recongnizable by a couple of "up" arrow, covering the access to the filter. Remove this panel and you can slide the tray holding the filter toward you. But in any case I would advise reading the material at: http://www.airsept.com/eed.html You can also avoid this problem by opening the windows slightly in the garage at night to let the trapped moisture evaporate out of the vehicle. For those of you in the more nothern areas you can avoid, mostly, the incidents of early morning windshield fog in this manner. Without some method to remove the moisture accumulated during the previous day's use of A/C you can end up with a dirty gym socks odor and/or windshield fogging about five miles down the road on a coolish morning when the blower kicks in due to the engine water jacket temperature finally have risen to 130F.

  4. Snow mode.... Some versions simply start off from a stop in second gear, later versions actually modify the engine torque curve. Regardless, you should be able to "feather" the throttle enough that you can simulate snow mode satisfactorily. In central MT I always had a bag of sand laying in each side of the trunk as near the wheel wells as I could get them. And I ALWAYS had a set of snowchains on board during the 10 winter months. Were I you I would be VERY careful to avoid FWD vehicles or front torque biased AWD. Those can be extremely dangerous to handle in the kind of weather often encountered in MT.

  6. The 90-94 series, insofar as I know, only has one heater, hot water, control valve, mounted at the top center of the firewall within the engine compartment. It is very likely a really easy DIY project and the control cable from the airflow mixing vane servomotor slips on and/or off quite easily and doesn't really need calibration, just be sure it's at the full closed position in max cool. As an aside, I remove the control cable during the summer months and tie the valve into the fully closed position. Improved cooling efficiency and slightly better MPG. If you're not seeing an substantial level of antifreeze loss you might be looking at simple seepage which is hard to avoid for a car this old.

  8. NO! There is a CAUTION warning in your owners manual regarding having greater roadbed traction in the front vs the rear. With FWD or front torque biased AWD (like the RX) it can be extremely hazardous to have more grip in the front than in the rear. That's why NO tire shop will install studs only on the front and now the rear, liability simply too great.
  9. If the nav DVD door is open the message doesn't come up. You can probably simulate an open DVD door remotely using one of the newly available remotely controlled relays, say from Hella. I don't use the one in my 01 RX300 very much, found it so unreliable as to be virtually useless, so I just leave the DVD door open most of the time.
  10. Easiest if you remove the wheel on the side of interest. Remove the OEM mud guard/splatter shield and then remove the screws holding the front of the rear bumper covering/facade, wraparound. Now there is only one bolt that is difficult to get at and it is mounted vertically head down just at the top of the front of the rear bumper wraparound. You'll need to lift/pull out on the wraparound and use a 10mm socket with about a 6 inch extension to remove it. Now the only thing left holding things together is a plastic ball and socket about at the point where the wraparound begins the curve toward the rear bumper section. Don't forget to be careful to reseat it when you start to put things back together.

  13. Two, three(??) more screws "in the clear" if you look carefully around the exposed top of the assembly. One of the screws also holds the bottom grille piece in place.

  15. One of us (me??), or some of us, are confused, very. At the Lexus showroom today the 05 LS430 did not have a VSC off switch, nor did the 05 ES300, nor the GS470 and LX470, although I didn't check the model year on the latter two. And, the 05 AWD RX330 did NOT have a VSc off switch/mode. The LS did have a Trac off switch and the RX330 had an ECT/snow switch. The salesman (whose word alone I don't trust anyway) said that none of the Lexus vehicles that he knew of had such a capability and then he went on to ask why someone would want to disable VSC. I explained the BMW capability and the whys and therefore but I don't really think he took it to heart. The truth of the matter is that the only real need is to have some way to disable the dethrottling aspect. It happens that BMW chose to do this via VSC disable. And by the by someone on another forum pointed out to me that Toyota.com now has very good animation of all of these individual aspects, ABS add-ons, if you go into the vehicle's in-depth area. Not as comprehensive as would be desired but certainly understandable.

  17. In lock-up the engine will turn, is forced to turn, at the rate of the transmission input shaft. Out of lock-up the transmission input shaft, during coastdown, is "driving" the torque converter. In that case the engine RPM would drop, not rise. Out of lock-up: When the engine is "driving" there is always a loss of RPM through the torque converter. When the engine is lagging, coastdown, reversing the "drive" path, the engine will always turn slower than the transmission input shaft.
  18. Lots of buzz is going around about acceleration hesitation on all Toyota/Lexus FWD, or front drive biased AWD vehicles. The rumor is that the RX has been fixed. On another forum someone posted that they noticed that their Sienna engine RPM rises about 500 to 1000 RPM when applying the brakes while coasting downhill. That got me to thinking out loud.... COPY Probably part of the hesitation issue/problem. With the Prius you can chose to use the regeneration system to simulate engine lagging torque or you can chose actual engine lagging torque. In the latter case they tell you that fuel economy will suffer. Suppose, say back in 01, Toyota learned from the Prius experience that if you put the transmission in neutral during any type of coastdown, the fuel economy is increased by 2 to 3% Note, the EPA would be involved.... My 01 AWD RX300 certain seems to have this feature. When I lift my foot from the pedal at highway speeds it seems/feels as if the tranny shifts into neutral. The other time I notice this is just before coming to a stop, at just about the time I would release the clutch with a manual transmission the vehicle suddenly feels as if someone bumped me from behind lightly. I'll have to go out and check but I wouldn't be surprised that during highway coastdown if I apply the brakes slightly the transmission would shift back into gear to add the engine lagging torque back into the braking equation. Just as flyingfox described above. Now, here I am, sitting stopped at a traffic light, inadvertantly with the transmission not in 1st gear, and I decide to dig-out! Really rough on those transmission clutches and bands, going from neutral or second into first while the engine is climbing in RPMs. No e-throttle here! Strange. My RX doesn't require any transmission fluid service, EVER. At least according to the owners manual. I have asked Lexus (customer_satisfaction_inquiries@lexus.com) why, at only 38k miles, with the extra towing cooling package, and NO hitch, my transmission fluid is looking burned and has a slight burned odor. Their written response is that I should take it in to the dealer. Remember that these vehicles were shipped with a specific EPA standard MPG rating. Haven't I seen somewhere that the 05 RX has a lower MPG rating than the 04? And the RX no longer has the hesitation problem...!! So how would Toyota keep the higher MPG and still prevent those bands and clutches from wearing out too soon. why not use an e-throttle to delay engine torque onset while we shift the tranny into the proper gear?? No burned clutches or bands and no notification to the EPA, or the public, that the MPG was miscalculated.
  19. With snowchains on the rear it (01 AWD RX) handled SUPER here in the Seattle eastside area last winter during our ice storm. But wouldn't have dared venture out without the snowchains.
  20. A/C compressor will run a LOT less often, less load on the engine, better MPG, etc.
  21. Thinking about using a Ford electric fuel tank selector valve to turn off hot water flow to the climate control system during the summer months. Anyone tried this or an equivalent.
  22. Several things are contributing to my decision to go with the X3. one of the reasons I have always liked the RX is because they don't "blackout" the dash surface and stearing wheel. With any BMW the dash and stearing wheel will always be black regardless of interior color otherwise. Now all Rxes come with a blacked out dash. I will never own a FWD because of their hazardous nature on adverse roadbed surfaces. The RX AWD is a compromise for me since it is front torque biased. Now I keep hearing stories of lack of quick acceleration and hesitation with sudden WOT and that is quite worrisome. I suspect it is a try to help alleviate some of the hazards of FWD which is why Toyota is saying it will not be fixed. And yes, I returned the X3 to the dealer and told the salesman that the vehicle felt "ponderous", heavy. But then so does my C4. If the suspension is too light on the X3 then the springs can be changed out for less than $500, but it seems the RX will always be FWD and suffer from hesitation. Additionally we just acquired a motorhome and the BMW, 3.3L, manual, can be towed with all wheels on the ground.
  23. Turned the VSC off??!! Are you sure? I haven't seen a VSC off switch on any Lexus model. Someone did recently post that their 05 RX had one but my 01 RX certainly doesn't. My 92 LS has "Trac off" but that's an entirely different, useless, system, on or off.
  24. The early LSes did not have VSC/Trac, therefore no VIRTUAL LSD, therefore no go in the snow. I think, far from sure, the 98's and later have VSC.
