Thinking Of Getting An Sc

Recommended Posts

hi, my name is riley and im located in tampa florida. in 1999 i purchased a GS300 and i loved it.. it was the nicest most amazing car i have owned. well since then i sold it and bought an IS300 which was also an awesome car.. now my wife is going to take the IS300 and im thinking about buying something else.. something under 8k( trying to minimize spending)

i have looked around on autotrader.com and other sites and have found some nice 1994-1996 SC300's for sale @ 6000-8000$ i was wondering has their been any major issues w/ a certain year SC300 that i should be aware of.

thank you very much for your time, and opinions.

Not really. There really isn't any particular year that you'd want to avoid. The SC was pretty much outstanding since 1992. The body changed a bit through the years (92-94, 95-96 and 97 up). The 97 up body styles seem to be real popular. Here are a few things for you to look into when searching for the "right one".

Lower control arm bushings tend to go bad around 100k

leather on early SC's weren't as good as in later years

Just look for one that has been taken care of and you should get many many more miles out of it. I recenlty got into the SC world when I picked up a 1992 SC400 on ebay for $5000 with 159k on it. It runs and drives like brand new after I gave it a tune up and replaced the tranny mount and driveshaft bushings.

Good luck on your search.

thanx alot for the info, im really glad you guys are nice.(ive been to alot of forums that arent)..

but thanx again.. also i was looking at a 1996 sc300 burgundy w/ tan leather.. the interior looked really nice... and it was liek 6000$ so i figured that was good (120kmiles)

then i looked at alot of 93's and the interior was crap.

but thanks again, the more replys the better :-D

I've read that quite a few time. People complaining about early leather. I suppose I got lucky. At over 150K+ miles, and mine being a '93. My leather is outstanding. I've been looking at picking up an older GS300, and I've noticed that with a lot of the earlier ones the leather does seem to be in worse shape. Just doesn't seem to hold up as well. So, maybe that was a general problem with all Lexus'. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with how it was maintained also.

I would say welcome to the Lexus club, but it sounds like you've been here for quite awhile  So, if you do end up getting an SC, welcome to the SC Club!. ;)
