I read somewhere that if your valve covers are leaking, (which they were) oil will seep into those square holes and still be there after you have replaced the valve cover gaskets. The heat will make it expand and bubble up between the exhaust gasket and head. Sounds responsible since the oil that is pooling and bubbling up there is dirty, and my dipstick oil is clean because I changed the oil. What are those square holes for anyway?
