RXlover Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 One of the car care links off this site had an article on caring for White paint. The author stated that white paint is the hardest compared to the other colors and in many cases does not have/need a clearcoat. Does anyone know if this is true for Lexus vehicles (painted white)? I thought all modern paint jobs had a clearcoat for UV protection. My Rx300 is color code 065. I am going to be performing some chip repair and I need to know if I should buy a clearcoat touchup paint. A clearcoat touchup paint is not listed/sold on Lexus-Parts.com so I will need to get it somewhere else (if needed). If clearcoat is used, is it lacquer or something else? Thanks for replying.
SW03ES Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 Some paints still do not have clearcoat, Lexus black for instance. Lexus white is not a pure white but a pearl, so it definately has a clear.
RXlover Posted May 5, 2004 Author Posted May 5, 2004 So what type of clearcoat paint should I buy to apply over the white paint I'm using to fill in chips? Or perhaps I should not worry about topcoating my chip repair. I made the mistake once before of buying lacquer clearcoat for another car, and it turned out that the lacquer reacted with the factory paint (urethane I think) and ruined the job. Why doesn't Lexus sell the clearcoat in a touchup size container?
SW03ES Posted May 5, 2004 Posted May 5, 2004 They do, but with the touchup paint/brush clear usually isn't possible because the paint is so thick. I would use a touchup pen from www.autovisuals.com.
Lexusfreak Posted May 5, 2004 Posted May 5, 2004 Pearl whit paint is one of the hardest colours to match (if entire body panels have to be repainted after a collision for an example). Regular touch up's shoud give you a two sided "paint pen" one with the white paint & the other a clearcoat.
RXlover Posted May 5, 2004 Author Posted May 5, 2004 I would use a touchup pen from www.autovisuals.com. Thanks for the tip. I ordered a touchup pen in white and one in clear. Mike
