Enola Straight Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 My steering wheel is loose. (wobbles slightly in my hands as I drive) How do I remove the air bag cover and airbag to get at the nut I have to tighten?
gbhrps Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Enola Straight, Caution!!!!! Disconnect the battery and wait 30 minutes before you mess with the air bag. If it goes off while you're working on it and your face is too close when it fires, your relatives will be planning a funeral. Air bags have an electrical capacitor that stores enough electrical power to fire them several minutes after an accident, even if the battery is destroyed at impact. Most steering wheel covers have screws on the back side of the steering wheel that have to be removed before the cover comes off. Others simply unsnap as you pull towards you. Once the cover is off, there will be some fasteners that hold the air bag, and once removed, the nut is underneath. Good Luck!
Enola Straight Posted July 27, 2011 Author Posted July 27, 2011 I figure I needed to disconnect the battery so the airbag won't blow up in my face. Didn't know I needed to wait at least 1/2 hr. Thanks for the tip!
Enola Straight Posted July 27, 2011 Author Posted July 27, 2011 I have found a pair of access panels on the back of the steering wheel which reveals a pair of Torx heads. I assume these releases the airbag cover?
Enola Straight Posted July 27, 2011 Author Posted July 27, 2011 SUCCESS. Loosening the torx bolts releases the airbag and cover as a unit, allowing the loose steering wheel nut to be tightened with a socket wrench. It's Miller Time!
