I noticed in the recent couple of months that when I shift the gear from P to R, N & D as usual; the indicator (lights) on the dashboard flashes as if the gear stick is not firmly stuck in to the current shift and it decreases soon as the car is warm up

Actually when I am in total stop, I usually don't put the shift into N but I rather keep my foot on the Brakes until I start moving again & in that position I notice my dashboard having the rpm going up & down the indicator lights of the gear blinking as usual which usually SHOULD only happen directly before shifting from P -> R -> N -> D.

I suspect something under the gear stick that needs to be replaced, any ideas?

It could be the selector switch on the shift playing up,maybe dirty intermittent contacts try some switch cleaner lube type spray on it
