camlex
Hello, My 97 ES300, I used Castrol 5W30 Synthetic Blend from day One. Due to rear main seal leak I am thinking to try Castrol High mileage 10W40. What you guys think, is it a good idea? My car has only 357,400. Thanks in advance. George_Jetson
I would be suprised if 10W40 would make a noticeable difference with the oil leak. My quess is that as hot as it is here in Tx, it would not hurt to try it this summer, but I would recomend swtiching back for the winter month! Lexusfreak
How much to fix the rear main seal or how much longer do you plan to keept the car? The leak won't get any smaller with time & a slightyly thicker oil.
camlex
$700, My mechanic saying it's not worth it. wait till trans. needs to change. Austin(UT) is taking my lots of money, I have to wait for next three years. No choice..
gbhrps
Here's an inexpensive-it-might-work-fix. My 90 Nissan 300ZX developed a rear main seal leak about 10 years ago. Mind you, the leak was minor, leaving a 3 inch sized pool of oil under the bell housing after each run. It was suggested by an online forum to change the PCV valves on the car (that car had 2 of them), as their poor operation would cause increased crankcase pressure that would push oil past the rear main seal. I took the advice, changed the PCV valves, and the car has not leaked a drop to this day. Good Luck!
