I purchased my 97 LS400 recently and it has an under the dash front and rear radar detector...short of crawling under the dash and taking a peek...was there a set type installed in them cos I have no documentation to tell me what kind it is or how it works

Would not think this is a Lexus option!!!!!!---probably a Valentine One or Escort. You can hope for a Valentine--should have a name somewhere. Type each one in Google and you may see both ends of these so you can see where the name is.

both will work by beeping with a light flashing in the presence of radar(X thru laser), again go to google. Think new Valentines come also with adetecter for the rear of the car

These would cost probably $500-$600. Valentines are $399. just to set on the dash--and are the best[but don't start a thread on this!!!].

I believe this was installed at purchase time. There are two red dots under the speedometer..one left and one right..if the signal is coming from behind the right one will go off and the front is the left light...Ill go under and look around

On the Escort site: http://www.escortradar.com/sr7.htm

They have a professional installation available with a green and red LED installed in the instrument panel and the control unit is hidden under the dash. Note that the price for this is $1100. !!!!!!! Hope that is what it is and you have a DEAL !!!

yeah but I'd still HOPE for the Valentine. I have an Escort and it's pretty good. I'd love to have the hidden one as they are illegal in Virginia (why I'm not sure). Oh well, I've always figured a $25-$75 ticket for a detector with no license points is a lot better deal than a speeding ticket (not that I admit to speeding).

Either way, what a deal for you.

Lexus dealers will install an Escort unit with two LEDs in the gauge cluster. Thats probably what it is. The Valentine one uses arrows that show what direction the radar is coming from.

Agreed, what a deal! Does it work?

My '93 came with those LEDs (green/orange in the center and 2 red ones beside it) on the instrument cluster and reflects off the gauges like the hand brake lights. At first I thought it was an aftermarket alarm until the seller informed me that it was a 'factory installed' radar detector - then the beeps started making sense. It works but I turn it off when I'm in San Francisco or in a shopping district since those motion sensors on the automatic doors can set it off from across the street.

I don't have a manual and I have not been under that side of the dash to find the unit.

Assuming the unit is an Escort: Find out what type it is then go to the online manuals from the Main site:

http://www.escortradar.com

NOT the site I listed above since it is for one model only and that may not be yours---print out the manual---there are adjustments for sensitivity(door openers), volume, etc.

o ya it works like a charm...Im just trying to figure outwhat the different tones are and how I can adjust it. All thats under the dash is a little knob with a ring around it. I think the ring has three settings..off/highway and city. Although the off is easy..i dont know which is highway and which is city and whether the other knob inside of it is total sensitivity or front to rear sens. In order to get the model Ill have to take off the bottom thingie thing thats covering it up with a phillipshead

He was blowing you smoke with that one, no manufacturer sells a installed radar detector, they're ALL aftermarket.
