When Do I Know That The Ps Pump Is Going Out?

It is squealing in low turns and it slightly difficult to turn, but not bad. Does the PS pump just go out or is it a gradual thing? Should I go after-market or pay the $600 for a OEM part (I think I know the answer to that one)?

Mine does better in warm/hot weather and it dont leak as much either. In the winter, it leaks like a seive.

Even now though, it will occasionally make a growling sound, even when it still has some fluid. I accidentally overfilled it this AM and it still growled for about 3 minutes. Still steers fine.
