1996 Gs300 Tranny Slipped, No Go And No Reverse

Recommended Posts

I'm a new owner of a used gs300, the same day I bought my car my transmission (A350E) started to slip until I had to pull over and had nothing after that... wonder if anyone has any ideas of what it can be? electronic or mechanical? I've searched and found one input on the internet about it can be sensors, or throttle pressure cable.. I cant get access to a repair manual or am I ready to take the car to a shop, I don't trust mechanics and I do the work myself.. so any insight would be really helpful.. oh and I'm going to get a computer tomorrow to check for codes, but if codes pop up, I'll have no reference.. closest lexus dealership is over 100 miles away..

thanks, Mike

i would love to, but I cant drive it anywhere... I just cleaned out the filter and put toyota atf fluid in it and it got into reverse and drove into second gear all when I was in the parking lot.. put it back in to park for less then a minute and no gears again.. it felt strong tho when it was getting in gear and changing gears.. I don't get it.. maybe a solenoid?

I know, towing... haha.. but I'm not going to go that route yet... I'm optimistic.. I did talk to a lexus mechanic today, finally! he said it might be the transmission pump.. over-filling the fluid could cause too much pressure buildup and also lack of circulation.. there was a high pitch squealing sound that used to be there before, he said it was prolly the pump going out and parts of it may have grinded off and also impeding the filter so that even less fluid was moving through... so a bad cycle of things getting worse and worse.. i was told the pump is pretty pricey and requires the tranny to be dropped, and even so, there could have been abnormal wear from that incident that would call for a complete rebuild... sheeet.. just my luck.. getting a used tranny is almost scary, but the price of one shipped to me is $1000 and a-1 certified by insurance inspectors and I forgot to ask the milage and it's an A350E from a 97 GS300.... or 25-2800 for AAMCO to rebuild with a 1 year, 12,000 mile warranty... damn, I paid 2800 for my GS... but anyways.... my options are: maybe solenoid (if that can be a factor), the pump replacement if it's worth it, a certified tranny from a wrecked lexus, or a costly overhaul with a decent warranty...

Hey Man....I see that it is 2 months later but was wondering if you could let me know the outcome of your transmission problem. I have a 1994 GS300 that recently started having issues....sounds very similar to the issues you had.

I believe that there was too much fluid in the tranny and could have messed up the tranny pump from too much pressure as mentioned before. When the car is started, it makes a sound similar to that of a Power Steering system that is low on fluid (whining sound). Anyways, The car drives fine for about 10 min and then it eventually starts slipping which makes me think that the transmission is overheating and causing the slippage.

What route did you go with the tranny? Swap it out for a new/used one or do a transmission rebuild? I really gotta get this fixed asap but don't want to spend a ton of $$$ (which I know is hard when having a Lexus)

Any response and knowledge would be greatly appreciated!

I my self have a 1995 GS 300 with about 181,000 miles. Two weeks ago i changed my oil. The next day when i went out and started the car i let it warm up for about five minutes than got in too go to work. When i put it in reverse and tried to go it took around 3200 rpm's just too start to move. Then when i shifted it into drive it took about the same Rpm's to go but ounce i start going the tranny acts fine. Even when i stop and start again after that its just fine. It only seems to happen first thing in the morning every day.

I was thinking last week that for some crazy reason i drained the transmission fluid on accident being that it was the first time i was changing the oil on this vehicle(that would be pretty stupid). But after checking the oil and tranny level that doesn't seem to be the case. All my fluids are fine.

I was also wondering why it does this only in the morning. I don't here a whining sound like you guys but it bugs me.
