Hey all,

I have a 1997 LS 400 that I purchased in May with 107,000 miles. This morning when I tried to start the car the car all the electronics came on as usual then suddenly all of the electronics turned off...completely and the car would not turn over, not even a hint of turning over. I tried to start the car repeatedly but the only lights that came on were the open door light and the little circular light around the ignition. As soon as I put the key into the ignition these lights went out as well and the car would not turn over. My wife tried her key and the same thing happened.

This evening I checked the fuses, and battery terminals (which were tight) and even pulled out 4 fuses just to make sure nothing had blown, they were fine. Then, just for the heck of it, I tried to start the car again and the lights all came on as usual and the car started right up like nothing was ever wrong. Any ideas, thanks in advance.

That is strange. Perhaps a battery cable was loose?

The cables are good but after looking through this site I think it may be due to my leaking power steering pump leaking fluid on the alternator and causing a short...Any other ideas?

Unless it's coincidental, just by the sequence you describe, fuses seem to have something to do with it. I would check your batt anyway. And make sure it's being charged.

The Battery was new when I purchased the car about 8 months ago. Today I had no problems what so ever with it but I bet its just waiting to strand me somewhere.

Even new batt's can be a prob. With 107k, don't think she's got evil on her mind, and wouldn't say it too loud in case she's listening! :D

Yeah, I was thinking maybe a cell in the battery might be intermittent. Could still be even though relatively new.

I would get a voltmeter and check the voltage before starting and with it started just for a baseline.

And I would clean the battery cable connections well...on both ends. Though rare to go bad, there is a chassis ground connection that could be loose/corroded.

I could be wrong but I thought the power steering pump location was moved on the series 3 LS so it wasn't sitting over the alternator.
