Nakamichi Amp Issue?

I know this topic has been beat to death, but here is my issue: My Nakamichi stereo died while driving my 94 LS400. I get a tiny amount of static out of the speakers at the lowest volume and a continuous thump-thump-thump out of the sub at any volume level above zero.

I assume this is an amp issue? Are their any alternatives I should check first (aside from fuses)? I am looking for a walk-through, if possible, for repairing the amp as spending $300 on a refurb (10% of the cars value) seems very silly.

Thanks!

You need to eliminate the head unit as an issue, I own a car stereo shop (25 years), you need to get to a shop and pay the diag fee.
