The lower gears are mainly for the car to get up to speed and not used extensively. SW03ES Posted December 19, 2003 Share Posted December 19, 2003 Well, actually the upshifting isn't going to do anything for you except hold the gear that it is in longer. Thats not going to help economy, it will hamper it. For instance, putting the car in "2" wont put the car in second gear from a start. When you start the transmission will start in first, upshift to 2nd just where it always would, and then hold in second. Same is true of selecting 3 or 4 on the shifter. Its not a manumatic. The purpose of adding those lower gears is for downshifting. For instance if you're going down a highway grade you can shift from D to 4 to 3 to use engine braking to slow the car and save on the service brakes.
