guitarjon Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I failed my smog test and realized later that i was missing my airbox connected to my stock intake. I didn't notice it was missing when i bought the car. Does anyone know if missing the airbox will make your check engine light come on? Cause thats what is happening to me. And i got the codes p0440 and p0446 back from the smog test. Does anyone know if buying the original airbox and installing it should solve the problem? Please help.
guitarjon Posted June 18, 2008 Author Posted June 18, 2008 That's the thing i just bought this car and need to get it smogged again but my CEL light comes on and im wondering if its cause im missing the airbox. Cause i get the p0440 and p0446 codes when i first got it smogged and it failed and those are evap codes. Is there any aftermarket intake i can buy where i wouldn't need the air box? Cause its kind of hard for me to find one. I've seen some pictures of peoples engines where they had an aftermarket intake and didn't have the stock airbox. Im really in a bad position right now cause i cant register my car and help would greatly be appreciated right now.
smooth1 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Well, to really be able to help, I need to see what exactly is missing. Can you take a picture of it and post it? If I could see what you have now, I could tell you how to go about correcting it. I don't know how much air ducting your missing, and what kind of set up is on it now.
bartkat Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 You're getting the evap codes because the hose that goes from the air box to the evap system is disconnectd and/or plugged. If that system isn't connected that's what happens. The aftermarket intakes have a place to hook that hose up.
smooth1 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I have someone with an OEM air box for sale : Air box for sale But you'll need to hurry.

I dont have a camera at the moment but my engine is all stock. Here is a picture of what i am missing. Note: im missing the part of the bottom right of the intake. So basically the whole from where it is missing is wide open at all times right now.
smooth1 Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 So the part with the air filter is still on it? Do you have the part that is in the lower left hand side?
guitarjon Posted June 19, 2008 Author Posted June 19, 2008 So the part with the air filter is still on it? Do you have the part that is in the lower left hand side? Yea i still have the part with the air filter. For some reason now after unhooking my battery and resetting my cel i've driven quite awhile and nothin has come on. Hopefully it'll pass smog if the light doens't come back on. Also, do i really need that piece of the intake? Cause i've seen some people install an aftermarket intake without that piece.
bartkat Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 It's going to intake hotter air without the snout. Also if the fans come on it can cause turbulence into the air box and cause stalling.
smooth1 Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Yeah, like Bartkat has stated, it does help. If you can track one down I would. Even the CAI's and so on use that metal divider thing to keep the air smoother and to help draw air in away from the motor. ( they don't really work that well though.)

Do you think i could buy an aftermarket intake that wouldn't require that piece? Cause i plan on getting one anyways and i dont want to but the replacement piece then have to buy an aftermarket intake system after
bartkat Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Maybe. You'll need one with a heat shield that works. I don't know which ones are CARB approved though.
smooth1 Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 I know the K&N and AEM both have Emmisions codes on them. So you might want to check those out.
