Okay, well as the description says there is a high chance I am going to New York in the next few months (got accepted to Syracuse University) from Southern California (seen snow maybe 11 times).

My question is not about snow tires, already read up on those in this forum :) . My question is about protecting my car. I hear that the salt on the roads eats away at a car's undercarriage and I was wondering if there was any way to prevent this, or slow the process. I got my IS almost a year ago and have really been trying to keep it in perfect condition. I want it to last me 200k miles, and right now it is at 7400.

I really am hooked on this car and have a blast every time I drive it but I don't want it to get ruined. So is there anything I can do? Or am I exaggerating the problem?

I could leave it at home (sad day that would be :( ) and just buy some old thing to get me around but I REALLY don't want to.

Any help would be appreciated!

I tried looking in the forums already but all I found was information on the snow setting and snow tires.

I don't think the salt is really that big of an issue.

You can get a hose or go to one of those do it yourself car washed and spray water on the car's undercarriage or go to a car wash that has a car's undercarriage rinse option .

I flush the car's undercarriage when it's warm enough to wash the car.I don't go to car wash places.

^^^+1. Cars are so much more resistant to rust than they were 20 years ago. Seriously, when was the last time you saw a car all rusted out? How old was it?

I've lived on the east coast my whole life...never had a car rust out (OK, my 65 Willys Jeep did). Just wash undercarriage a few times a winter. You will have a lot of other things go bad before rust.

Not sure I agree with that statement. Here's a pic of mine after one winter of salt and grit on the roads. I plan to wire brush and apply rust preventive and a good Hardwax Underbody Protection.
