I had a 1999 rx300 before my rx330. it is 4X4 all the time and the way you can tell is by looking at the buttons under the dash, where the heated seat buttons are. (above the shifter area). If the far left button has a trac off button, it is 2wd, if it is left blank, it is 4wd. im sure you have seen the hundreds of threads about AWD transmissions on the RX, so be careful and make it the car was properly maintained. i owned mine for 4 years, (AWD) and nothing happened to it, but my lease was up after that at 95K miles.
