Squeaky Steering Wheel

Recommended Posts

It is a issue that Lexus knows about. How much it will cost you depends on where/when you bought the car. It requires lubricating the drive mechanism. It costs about 30 minutes labor I am told. Not too bad, the noise is much worse!

You could also have the dealer disable the wheel movement if you want. They have the codes to do that.

If you try to do it yourself, DON'T use WD-40...find out what lubrication Lexus factory recomends!

Good luck! ;)

98 GS4...I was just quoted $340 for lube only, at the dealership. On a better note, I just adjusted the wheel top to bottom, front to back and I guess there was enough lube somewhere in there to stop the squeak. If it comes back, I guess I'll just dismantle the thing myself.

So maybe they did remove the button on the newer ones... I'm in no position to say. All I know is that on my GS300 there is a button right beside the stalk that controls the power tilt/telecoping that says auto. With that button out, the steering wheel stays down when you remove the key.

On earlier GS's (and LS's for that matter), there was a button labeled "auto" next to the joystick. This turned the auto tilt-away on or off. In the latter models, the tilt-away function isn’t locally controllable and must be turned on and off by the dealer at your request. Hope this helps.

Hi, my steering wheel is also squeaking, but only when it retracts after I turn off the engine and remove the key. The car is a 98 GS400.

Should I be concerned about this? I can handle the squeak, but I don't want to lose steering 8-\.

I will look for that auto feature later.

Cheers
