NeiLtYmE Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 allright ... soo its getting to the bug me stage now... so this ticking sound that comes from the engine..... exactly what is it ? and is it a big deal.. ? costly fix ? helllp i know its something about the valves n being outta sync or not enough clearance but i could be wrong.... teach me !
bbsal Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 that is what it is.you would have to take it to the dealer and have them fix it.it would probably cost a good buck though!.let me see if i have the documents on what it exactly is and i will post.
poneyboy Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Chances are, its your valves and they need adjusting. Yes, dealerships will charge you a *BLEEP*load of money for this very simple task. Try a trusted independent mechanic.
SKperformance Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 deals do charge alot to adjust the "valve lash" meaning the amount of clearance gained through normal wear and tear toyota does not use a self adjusting rocker not do they use a regualr bolt adjustment meaning the reason it is so expensive is because the tech has to measure each of the 24 valves and adjust the crank to tdc ( top dead center) and then apply a shim to each valve to stop the noise you could always use a thicker oil to try and quiet it down
NeiLtYmE Posted August 12, 2003 Author Posted August 12, 2003 not sure how much its worth it though.......
SKperformance Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 i think it was around $500 give or take a bit for some of the shims extra if needed
m2pc Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 So if the clearance is off, how much damage could this cause by leaving it alone?
Steve Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 that ticking is just the injectors... and if I am right the valves adjust themselves.. nothing to worry about.
SKperformance Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 nope the valves don't adjust tehmselves there is nothing to worry about it is just annoying and it will wear more with the increased lash also the performance and fuel economy suffers slightly as well
NeiLtYmE Posted August 12, 2003 Author Posted August 12, 2003 performance is effected by valve lash ? i get about 21 mpg everytime
amf1932 Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 Excessive backlash could conceivably lower your gas mileage very slightly since your valves are not opening as much as the factory specifications call for.
SKperformance Posted August 13, 2003 Posted August 13, 2003 ;) it is also possible to get valve float but highly unlikely and not much oof a problem on es's before vvt-i
NeiLtYmE Posted August 13, 2003 Author Posted August 13, 2003 how does a problem like this develop ? not changing the oil as frequent ?
amf1932 Posted August 13, 2003 Posted August 13, 2003 Normal wear and tear. Following the proper maintenance schedule will prevent this from happening too soon.
SKperformance Posted August 16, 2003 Posted August 16, 2003 proper pil changes and changin to thicker oil for summer use helps considerably as well as synthetic i have heard tons of other ES cars and they all tick much louder than mine i guess i got lucky and kept up with the preventive maintance
