Alexi
hello all! after having the ''CEL + Traction Off ''in my face for about 2 weeks now i finally got fed up and did the ghetto scan(jumping with paper clip), and i came up with two error codes..... (i also noticed while i was counting how many times the cel blinked, that the ''traction off'' light was constantly blinking??) 1) 71 (egr system malfonction). 2) 41 (tp sensor signal). Now believe me i've been doing tons and tons of searches and reading ,but just need to know if i need to get it further diagnosed to pin point the problem within let's say for example: the egr system, or is it as simple as just replacing the EGR modulator? I haven't been able to find a thread that explains exactly what these codes mean . ofcoarse i know the codes represent egr and tps , but thats it. any input would be highly appreciated.. Also i've been closely followin CanadaCraig's thread called(please do me a favor) and i thoght i'd try to see how long it would take my LS400 to reach 60mph , and it took 10 secs. i have noticed it is a bit slow(launch) and i cant spin the wheels from a stand still???? could that be assosiated with my egr or tps??? again. any input or thoughts would be really appreciated.... Al. PS. it's a 1991 LS400 270XXX kms regularly maintaned by dealer, very clean engine/tranny, intake (k&N) just cleaned and oiled, records show lots of work was done to it. and BTW, the egr pipe was replaced 5 months ago.... 93ls400walt
Maybe the erg code was never cleared. Clear it by removing the neg battery terminal clamp for a couple of minutes. There is a fuse you can remove so you don't have to reset everything. But I am not sure which one it is. Be sure to disable or know the activation code for you stereo before disconneting the battery. Code 41 is for the tps itself or the wireing harness, But as most codes go, the final prob. may be the ECM. Look at www.lexls.com for advice on adjusting the tps. You can buy a new tps from park place lexus in plano, texas for $75.00. www.newlexusparts.com The codes narrow you to the system failure. The a service manual will lead you through the sequence of testing, Mainly ohm and voltage testing of each sensor or part. Look at www.bgprod.com for info on having your erg system cleaned. Rpm's at about 1100 . i'll floor the pedal and the rpms will jump real high ,while the speed is not improving , untill the tranny shifts and then starts to improve.im also getting poor gas milage. so yeah. im pretty sure i have a problem within the egr system or the tps system. I'll keep y'all updated as im really anxious to find and fix this problem, but in the mean time , ANY input would be appreciated. Al. 93ls400walt
The repair manuals matrix chart shows that the EGR system shoukd be checked if you are having rough idling. For hesitation and or poor acceleration the first place to look is the Switch condition signal circuit. Which inclede the TPS. The Park/Neutral position switch. And the Air conditioning signal switch. All three adjust the air flow/idle speed. The second area for poor acc. is the Volume air flow meter. Then the injector circuit. After that it's the fule pump control circuit. You will find a fee access to an online factory manual at http:// techinfo.toyota.com. Around $10.00 per day. Alexi
**UPDATE** I thought i'd tackle my EGR(code 71) problem today, and here's what i came up with..... I started with the VSV.... Removed the VSV, tested it , it was ok. Then i tested the EGR vacuum modulator,it was ok. And last i removed the EGR valve..........Sure enough there was my EGR problem! OMG was it ever clogged up with gunk and carbon!!!!!! I mean one of the ports(the top one if i recall) was COMPLETLY clogged up with gunk!! So i bought a can of throttle body cleaner and started cleaning it. then i noticed there is a plate (which the egr valve attaches to) that attaches to the intake manifold. the top port on the manifold was also completly clogged with gunk. it was only 2 nuts and two screws to the plate off , so i took it off , cleaned the back side of the plate(was also full of crap!) .Also attached to this plate is the EGR temp sensor if im not mistaken. I also cleaned all the crap off of that. Put everything back together and that was it! No more code 71!!!! i had the battery dissconnected the whole time i was working on it BTW. The results... SMOOOTH shifts! No more code 71, SMOOOTH idle, and i'll bet way better fuel mileage. Unfortunatly the 0-60 is still the same(10 secs) But top end has improved dramaticlly!!! :D Here are the procedures.......... http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index...ost&id=4314 http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index...ost&id=4177 "j.barleycorn" had these files posted in some previous threads. thanks . i was also going to take off the throttle body and clean it, but i looked inside and it looked as if was cleaned recently. Even the back side of the back plate was clean! So that, i dont have to worry about . I still have to tackle the TPS problem. You guys think that has anything to do with my slow 0-60 ?? Well, time and tinkering around further more will only tell. Untill then i'll keep this thread updated . Just glad i'm through with the EGR prob. It was very easy to do BTW. I would recommend that everyone check there EGR valve. It is VERY easy to do and takes 5 mins to take off. If there is a modurator following this thread please keep this thread on the first page for easy viewing for the members. Thnx in advance.... Al. Alexi
One more thing, as i was scanning after EGR job. I noticed the "od/off" light blinking.(traction off was not blinking this time btw). anyway,it was blinking in a pattern,so i thought i'd count that too. It blinked 6 times, paused for 1 sec. then 8 times. paused for 3 secs. and then over again(6 then 8). Which means ''68'' ?? anyone know whats up with that??? Again this is not the cel i'm reffering to . it's the ''od off''. Thnx in advance.. Al.

Code Detection Condition = The kick–down switch is turned on before the accelerator pedal starts pushing in the switch. Trouble area = 1. Kick–down switch (Remains ON) 2. Harness or connector between kick–down switch and ECU. 3. Harness or connector between kick–down switch and body ground. 4. ECU If diagnostic code “68” is output all the time by the O/D OFF indicator light when the kick-down switch is switched on and off repeatedly, it is likely that there is an open circuit in the kick-down switch circuit.
