:wacko: My SC goes CLUNK when ever I step on the brakes going in reverse then goes CLUNK again when going forward. This only occurs the first time I hit the brakes after a direction change (forward/reverse).

In prior forms there was a discussion about the pads moving in the calipers when going in a different direction.

Does anyone know of clips/springs that stop tyhis annoying sound. My friends Camry uses small springs to push the pads one way and stops the sound. :huh:

It sounds like its a bad ball joint. I would recommend you check the ball joints to make sure there in good shape. When a ball joint goes bad you will get the same "clunk" as you described such as reversing and when you apply the brake...."clunk". The Sc should have springs mine does on both the front & rear. If not the part numbers for a SC400 are: (Front P/N 47743-24020 QTY. 4) & (Rear P/N 47743-50020 QTY. 4).

Dry or worn propeller shaft universal joints can also make a "clunk" when switching direction.

your pad could just be worn. look at the pads and see if they are worn

If your sure it is the brakes you need new shim kits. The shim kits should be replaced every other pad change, I replace them every pad change ( just the way I am ).

not necessarily, the pad backing metal may just be worn. i had the same problem an a GS400 and just changed pads and the noise was gone.

:D Thanks guys. I will check the ball joints, & springs. Replacing the front pads is the next item on my list along with installng SS hoses and flushing the system.
