PDXTXN
Is it possible to just swap out the factory subwoofer with a higher quality aftermarket one? Seems like I could just drop a new one in. Is the true?

bbsal
yes you could put a new one in but it has to be a free air sub and also you might need a bigger amp to push it.
martialartsguy
to do that you will have to take the back seat off and the side pannels in the rear to, it takes about 25 min to do it and 25 min to put it back on. but it is not worth just changing out the sub, the stock amp does not push it. i tried it, then just when with a aftermarket amp and 2 12" subs. good luck

evelynvang
could you explain step by step of replacing the amp and the sub?
DJ Automatic
could you explain step by step of replacing the amp and the sub? ← Pull the bottom part of your set up and outward on both sides, remove the headrests, under the velcro flap theres a 10mm nut remove it from both sides, then remove the seat belt bolts on the bottom where the bottom seat piece was removed, then remove the two 10mm bolts on the bottom holding the back panel seat in place, now remove the little screws from the shoulder straps seatbelts, ontop of the backseat rest. now remove the three black plastic push rivets with a flat head scewdriver (on the back panel). now pull the molding outward where the end of the window is it looks like this ---> ( pull that molding out just enough to remove the right side back piece against the left and right side, those two pieces are holding the back panel in, so remove those pull a little hard, then the back panel pulls out real easy. then remove sub and replace. then follow the steps backwards to put back. locotrucker
I replaced mine with a lightning audio ten inch sub and the only problem was that the screw holes did'nt line up so I had to drill more holes but other than that it was easy.
BGBOY
I replaced mine with a lightning audio ten inch sub and the only problem was that the screw holes did'nt line up so I had to drill more holes but other than that it was easy. I'm really new to all these DIY for car electronics. So could you please give me lil more details as to what else did you replace with Lightning Audio sub? I mean, were you able to just swap the Lighting Audio sub with OEM sub and it worked okay or you also replaced other parts as well such as amp etc.? Thanks in advance. Jayg1931
The factory sub works great for me, but the aftermarket stereo and factory amp don’t like each other. What wattage should my new amp be to power the existing subwoofer in a 99 gs300?
