Blank Sterring Wheel Buttons

I have blank buttons on the steering wheel that would normally be used for the phone. I was thinking of putting a bluetooth unit in the car and wanted to replace the blank buttons with working ones to control the bluetooth unit. Has anyone done this?

Adding steering wheel buttons means taping the harness for the column which includes the airbag.

The biggest problem is that is is a large fragile coiled flat wire which may not have extra wires if not equiped with the option.
