1998-2000 After-market Suspension Changes?

Recommended Posts

Hello Lexus owners. Please help me.

I have a 1998 LS400. Prior to this car I had a '99. Both cars have a really soft suspension set up. Prior to the Lexi I had Audi's so I'm used to a European suspension. I have grown weary of the floatyness of the car. It reminds me of a Lincoln Town Car. I either want to stiffen the suspension so that it rides more like a sports sedan or I will sell it. Am I reaching for the impossible here or is this doable? Your insight, experience and advice would be greatly appreciated.

What shocks do I put on the car to stiffen it up? I have 17" wheels on the car already. Will stiffening the car's suspension have negative consequences?

Thanks!

It all depends on how much your willing to spend. Tein's will offer you adj height and damping, but at a cool $1200.

No, I don't want an adjustable suspension...especially if it's air. I just want a firmer, more German-feeling ride.

Thank you, Sir. Appreciate your help!

No, it wouldnt be air.  To get the German feeling, you need coil overs, or some type of coils/shocks combo, a thick strut bar, and a front end brace.

Look at these:

I wouldn't change the springs or shock. We put a couple of aftermarket springs and shocks on the Ls400 and they hated it. Stick with the stock unit.

I know they take out the magic ride, but he really wants the handling. My LS rides, NOT handles like a BMW now. I bet if I add some suspension braces/componants, I might get closer to that goal, but thats not something im looking for.

If you read his post, he says:

I am not looking for a lower look though. Thanks for your suggestion.

A nice set of TEIN SS coilovers are amazingly smooth but are nice and tight in a turn plus you can go for the low look easily with tehm without bottoming out as they have shorter shock bodies.

The ride is too harsh for him. He is used to the Lexus soft and luxury set up. Personally I think the car handles much better with the aftermarket springs and shocks.
