july Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 When I turn on the engie, the cabin smells like gasoline. I took a look at the engine bay, and noticed the bottom half of the engine has this thick greasy film build up on it. I look at the ground underneath the engine and there are a few drops (some look pretty fresh) of oil. The oil was changed over a month ago. Could a failing head gasket be a potential problem?
vcv10guy Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 For your oil leaks it's most likely the valve cover gaskets. That's a common problem on the ES. Have your engine steam cleaned and checked for leaks to confirm that it is the valve cover gaskets leaking. As for the gasoline smell, I'm not too sure about. Can you smell it in the engine bay?
xxxavier2k Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 If you're starting the car cold then the auto choke should be activated. This makes the fuel/air mixture gasoline-rich. If you have an air leak then the mixture will be way too rich and could explain the smell of gasoline. Look at your intake hose and the iacv feeder hose and gaskit for leaks. You quite likely will also have to clean the iacv.
SKperformance Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 their is a 3rd injector in the manifold it may be plugged and spraying the wrong way. Causing you to smell it if their is another external leak.
july Posted February 15, 2005 Author Posted February 15, 2005 I brought it to a mechanic, and he says the valve cover gasket, and cam seals need to be replaced. I guess while I'm at it, I might as well change the timing belt and waterpump. I'm at 150K km.
