SC4Million
Hello Everyone, I am the proud new owner of a 1992 SC400. The car is black with 78000 miles. I've owned it for a couple of days now, thus far my list of completed projects includes: - New Brakes and Rotors: Front and Rear - Removed and Re-Sealed Headlights - Replaced 55w Low Beam bulbs with 65w Silver Stars - Full Synthetic Oil Change - Checked Power Steering Pump (No Leaks) - Checked and Tested all Gadgets and Gizmos (Everthing Works) The car is in pristine condition, abd I REALLY want to keep it that way. My only area of concern is when I turn the car off it "pings" loudly for quite a while. My only guess is that it is A/C condensation dripping on to the manifold, but I am unsure. Near Furture Projects: - Replace Stock Subwoofer with Rockford Fosgate P110S4 - Add MTX Thunder202 Amp - Replace 225/50R17 Tires (on dealer installed chrome 5-spoke rims) with 235/45R17 Michellin Pilot Sport A/s About 99% of the info I have on this car I've gotten from the forum. So any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.....I LOVE This Car!!!
lovlex
can you better decribe the ping noise? i just know of the ping noise with cheap gas :D
llama
SC4Mil, I've heard alot of 6 and 8 cylinder motors making the pinging noise that you are talking about, my own included. I think it is just the exhaust or an exhaust heat shield cooling off.
SC4Million
It sounds like the metal contracting as the engine cooles, but it is REALLY loud and constant... It only happens when I've been running the A/C...so I think that might be the cause
llama
Lovlex, the ping sounds like a fuel heater, like a kerosene heater, cooling off after it has been shut down.
lovlex
mine makes that noise also. it's the heat shield cooling off. drive it without the air and you will probably still hear it.

lovlex
let me know if that's your noise. :D
Calvin L
yea, I get the "pinging" too. All sources point to the cat. I believe the noise is the catilytic convertor cooling down.
