Timing Belt

Ive seen the how to at Lextreme's page. I know that the harmonic balancer is one of the special tools required but are there any other ones? Whats the need of having a big 500 piece tool set for? I know that not all 500 pieces will be used. Does anyone happen to know exactly what is used to change out the timing belt? Thanks.

After all these years of collecting tools, Ive ended up with a massive collection...close to if not more then 500 pieces. Ive read the timing belt PDF for first generation LS400's and was just wondering what "special tools" were required. I know the harmonic balancer is one of them but is there anything else?

92 lex,

I'll think you'll be in pretty good shape based on your collection.

I'm a torque wrench nut - so that's my most valuabel tool(s). Everything to spec ...........you'll need a 3/8" amd 1/2" t-wrench for sure....

Keep a 1-1 1/2" dia iron pipe about 2 ft long handy for a serious "breaker bar" aid....in case you need the leverage.

I'd make sure I had another car to drive while the LS is down.............

You just need a decent socket set and spanners.

When I did my '94 the only snag was that the crankshaft pulley was VERY tight

You need a long breaker bar and maybe even a length of scaffolding tube as an

extension.

Make sure you slacken this before you start removing all the other

stuff!

The crankshaft damper on mine came off without a puller, but it might be worth

finding someone with a 3 leg puller just in case

I found the job more slow than difficult, there is a lot to remove....mark or

photograph as you go, a friendly mechanic to help is worth a few quid, sorry I mean bucks!
