These 4.0 Lexus/Toyota V8's have always been slightly underrated. if i had one of these Torqy V8's back in my drag racing days, i would definitely modified it and run it at the track - but not in a LS400 Body - prolly woulda Strapped it to a Celica and run high 8's easily. There are racing parts for these engines now, thanks to Toyota's racing venture. and you can stroke one of these 4.0's to a hefty 4, 5, or 600+ Horsepower with the first stroker kit. just be ready to spend some mula on the parts, and the rebuild if you cant do it yourself. but thats on a whole different Forum alltogether - the toyota/Lexus V8 Forum - just for powertrain enhancements. they have links to all the goodies where you can buy these stroker kits for your V8's. also, on an episode of truckin', they now have a chip available to add more horse to these V8's -for the 4.7 tundra on that episode, so maybe the earlier Toyota V8's as well. so if you want a ridiculous amount of horsepower and want to be able to outrun a porsche Boxter from a redlight, the Toyota/Lexus V8 forum can show ya how...just be ready to fork out the dough. Lex ya later! M

your not kiddin around with the tune up! how many miles on your 95 LS? did you just purchase it? good question on the ignition coils, thats the way i see them on carson-toyota site too. i would have the coils tested before i replaced them all. mine tested out good, so i just replaced the plugs and wires. my old wires resistance were nowhere near the scale. since it seems your tax return is being put to good use - :) - check your Engine and Transmission mounts too, with the Transmission mount being #1 to do. you may already have, but they are fairly cheap and easy to fix - with everything you listed im guessing your going for that glass-smooth ride. if you are doubting the type of fluid that is currently in your transmission - it's good to replace it with the recommended toyota type in there - i need to do this also. someone else should chime in on the coils - im not going to guess at it since i didnt have to order mine. Best of luck! -ya got a lot of wrenching ahead of you!-

Have you had your transmission mount checked?? what you described in the MPH range is exactly how my LS was behaving, and others in this club. after i changed it out - the vibration/humming completley dissapeared. its a cheap enough part to go ahead and replace anyway, may eliminate your singing LS altogether. ;)

See this post: http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index...st&p=358279 I agree with SRK on that - but he did state "Briefly". the fact he has a 427 Cobra also tells me he has the experience to know when enough is "nuff"! not to mention good taste in single seated sportsters. ;)

alright all you speedsters!! i know its easy to go fast in these V8 sledsters, but make sure yous guys tires are rated for the speed you are going for, and that you got the brakes to stop it to! dont try and do 140+ on a 110 rated speed tire - im not saying its gonna blow apart or anything, but it can cause stress damage to the tire making them more succeptible to a blow out or cause them to be out of balance and out of round. also check each tire after you do such speeds to make sure the balance wieghts are still on your rims - they can fly off. if you ever here a loud thump on your fender well (going 90+mph) but knows for a fact you didnt run over anything, you can bet it's a balance wieght from your rim. for those of you who dont know what a tire speed rating is - (God Help)- its listed on your sidewall of the tire. I have General Tire Altimax RT's on my LS, and they have a Speed Rating T=118MPH. Standard Touring tires - just for travel and comfort. on the other hand, if i want to go really fast - i just hop in my 69' Fastback w/400+ ponies....to be completed summer 09'. :P nuff said...

or just plain drinking water - This is an old-school method of internally steam-cleaning your engine - same "careful" method as the sea-foam. what happens when the water mist enters the combustion chamber, the intense heat from the combustion converts the mist to instant steam, busting up any carbon build-up on your piston heads, valves, and exhaust ports. Steam is one of the best all around natural cleaners. I would not encourage anyone to do this as a first time DIY, cause you really have to let the hose "sip" the water slowly-it takes a good amount of solid water to actually Hydrolock an engine, but you always want to stay on the safe side. If i ever perform this J-crome, i will make sure and Post the process and results as you have - if you happen to try it, make sure your engine is at maximum op. temperature! one more thing, its really best to do such a process right before an oil change, cause any "moisture" or "residue" that make it past the oil/Piston rings during this process will settle in your oil pan and filter. (of course please let your baby cool down a bit afor you change the oil - dont mess w/your baby while she's hot cause' she will burn you!) - see? women and cars share much in common! no fense' ladies. be ye metal or flesh.

There is no stupid questions! :D The Brake booster hose actually originates from the intake manifold - the "seafoam" is "sucked" in along with the intaked air and distributed evenly through all the Cylinders, it does a good job of cleaning "surface" carbon, but not hard carbon buildup - it may however break it down to an extent to where it will loosen up eventually with a few applications with the seafoam. (These cars should not have too much of Hard-carbon buildup with proper maintanance) I did this same trick with my Acura Vigor using "seafoam" and Distilled water afterwards and it did very well. Try it and see! B)

2008 Lexus Overall Dependability Ratings
Marklouis replied to Randy&Bonnie's topic in 07 - 13 Lexus IS250 / IS350 / IS-F
Lexus really has set the Bar high in each perspective of the build quality of thier vehicles - i like to think of Lexus as the inspiration for other car manufacturers to reach that Bar - there is no thelling how many Lexus models have been bought over the years and reverse-engineered as a learning tool. im a stickler for Precision anyways, and thats what you get with Lexus. Drive on! -
Im also looking to purchase an LS430 for my wife this spring, but the 01 - 03 is the only model that can fit our budget right now :D which is still a nice upgrade from an 02 Honda Accord! i guess the coach edition is the one to shoot for with all the goodies?

New Transmission Mount Fixes Vibration Issue!
Marklouis replied to Marklouis's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
What do you mean by "shock-bumps"? The upper shock mount? I just ordered a couple of those, but I didn't know if there was another part I also need to replace. Thanks! I meant to say "shock bump stops", as described by another member here - i believe its # 5 in this illustration: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/ind...playCatalogid=0 someone correct me if im wrong here. ;) -
New Transmission Mount Fixes Vibration Issue!
Marklouis replied to Marklouis's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
Thanks - please do. I had been wondering if my transmission mount would cause most of my vibration problems and have hoped, since its cheaper and easier than the engine mounts. Strange, but the colder it is out, the less mine vibrates. It has gotten progressively worse since I bought the car when it had 204K. It has nearly 220K now. I took it to the Lexus dealer about 8K ago and they said it was my tires, but why would my tires cause a vibration through the steering wheel when the car is stopped? <_< One guy at the service desk said the mounts rarely go bad on these when I suggested it was the mounts causing it... yeah right. I would suggest to anyone with an LS over 10 years of age to just replace the rear transmission mount, its a cheap and easy PM item. Mine also had less vibration in colder weather - and it did get worse as time progressed.let me tell you, when i dropped my old mount out, it was actually seperated from its mating piece, which translates into my transmission rear wasnt even attached - just resting on it. i dont even ask guys at the Lexus Service anymore, i just search for the answer here or post for it. everyone here is most knowledgeable through hands on experience with thier Lexus-and you just cant find a better support group... ...unless your an alcoholic of course! ;) Cheers! -
born and raised in New York are ya? i can tell <_< fix that steering leak for sure-and that alternator has served well, replace it too. if that doesnt fix your issue, at least you know it eliminates that theory. good luck!

New Transmission Mount Fixes Vibration Issue!
Marklouis replied to Marklouis's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
I have 196k miles on the car - and yes, the poly-rubber type material manufactured at the time was pretty generic stuff, so 10 to 15 years is tops for the life of the material. So my LS is going to have a total poly-rubber-rejuvination experience this year! im replacing those ever pesky shock-bumps as well - to rid of that clunk on bumps syndrome. ;) -
It's really hard for me to believe that small rear tranny mount aleviated the vibration issue i was having, but it transformed my LS400 from an unbalanced washing machine set on spin to a smooth glass perfect still lake through all the gears! next is all the engine mounts that i noticed were cracking also, i just cant imagine this car riding any smoother now - this is where the part can be purchases for a 95 ls400 - should work on the 96,97 as well i think? http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/ind...playCatalogid=0 Very easy to replace, 4x12MM nuts, 4x12MM bolts, 4x14MM bolts-a few turns of the ratchet and your done! just make sure you support the tranny snug with a jack as you are changing it out. Thanks to all you LS lovers for the postings and advice! will post results of the replacement of the engine mounts next.

Engine Or Transmission Causing "chugging?"
Marklouis replied to JeffreyV's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
I hope your mechanic is knowledgable in imports. a diagnostic check is always the first thing to be done (on most cars with OBD1 or OBD2) - and most likely it is a faulty sensor causing your woes(hopefully an easily replaceable one). These trannys are almost bulletproof and yours with such low mileage im pretty positive the Fluid and filter was fine. Glad you replaced it with the recommended type though. please post the results of your findings! Good Luck! -
welcome and congrats on a wise choice of automobile my friend. you should try Autotrader.com and search within 200 miles of your zip code for an LS. i found mine on there and drove 178 miles to pick it up - best road trip ever! good luck on the search! ;)

I have 8k miles on my General Altimax's, so far a great tire for the price, and has handled the LS nicely. :D I researched on tireRack as well, and decided these were the best bang for the buck. Read the consumer reviews also.

Does Throttle Body Need To Be Cleaned (dealer Thinks So)?
Marklouis replied to docmas's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
Clean that puppy! :P i did mine (95 ls 190k) and it was DIIIIRTY!! carbon/gunk buildup on your throttle plate and walls reduces your air-mass flow effieciency - causing your air to "tumble" at a different (slower) flow rate than when it is clean, you might not actually "feel" the difference but your engine/ecu will notice it. i think the topside of the intake is removable also correct? i know it is on my 95 ls. might clean that puppy real good one day. -
What Kind Of Gas Mileage Do You Guys Get?
Marklouis replied to amcdonal86's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
yes, Ethanol does affect the gas mileage for sure. congrats on the 97 c i just wonder how many more bells and whistles you have over my 95 basic edition? -
since were on the subject of brakes, on a 95 ls400 - the combined disk/drum brakes in the rear, are the drum parts active when braking? or only active when the PB is applied...didnt even realize the rear rotors had inner drums till i had to take them off to replace some wheel studs.. ;) . they are very thin and cracking right now thats why im thinking they assist the disk pads in braking..
