Instrument cluster clock/climate control
bobsvilla replied to bobsvilla's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
When I asked this question 11 yrs ago, I had no idea that it would generate nearly 160,000 hits and uncover several other Lexus lighting deficiencies. Lexus Owners Forum is a great tool and has helped so many of us, Thx. to them Thx also to UMC3 and Jet pilot for helping me back in 2002....bob since the LS 400: SC400, Jag XKR conv't & now Audi S4 Conv't -
Instrument cluster clock/climate control
bobsvilla replied to bobsvilla's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
Hi, this is bob from "bobsvilla". I never would have imangined that this problem was so prevalent when we started this thread 3 years and 16,000+ views ago. Given that many bad lcd displays, one would think Toyota would step up to the plate and offer a recall or free replacement parts to rectify this problem. Maybe someone should lobby the government consumer affairs to look into the matter. My Mikado replacement, which by the way was an exact match to the original part both in colour and font, is still working fine. thanks UCF3 cheers, bob -
Finally Replaced P/s Pump But.....
bobsvilla replied to bezee's topic in 92 - 00 Lexus SC300 / SC400
Have someone inside the car turn on the a/c with the hood open, engine running you should hear a "click" followed by a slight decrease in engine idle speed. That will tell you when the a/c pump is on. Does your squeak follow the a/c pump cycle? -
My wife has a 92 LS400 with Nakamichi, I a 92 SC400 with premium sound. The sound quality is similar, the LS has more speakers and the amp has a lot more "Balls". I didn't know the Nak. was available in the SC?

typical aftermarket bushings are made from neoprene, a little softer than nylon, can you turn that? Should probably price the aftermarket ones, sometimes mass production has it's benefits.
-
if it is what I think it is, they sell you a small 1/4 watt resistor (Radio Shack 50 cents) and a wiring diagrahm where to install it. It fools the mass air sensor to thinking you have more air, so it dumps in a little more fuel.

try cleaning your battery posts/cables, it may be a cheap fix.

I had the O2 sensor do the same to mine. The sensor is expensive $125?? replacing it takes 5 minutes, like changing a spark plug only it's in your exhaust system. If it is the O2 sensor, you have to find out which one, there are 4. The error code will tell which one.

I can't imagine any manufacturer honoring your warranty after you add a supercharger/turbo. All that extra horsepower the car was not initially designed for surely will shorten the parts life expectancy. I remember them cancelling warranties if you took your car out to the local drag strip. ...bob

Condensation In Headlamps Instantly
bobsvilla replied to Mungrin's topic in 92 - 00 Lexus SC300 / SC400
I tried the "reseal", didn't work for me either. I think I'll try Zigzag's method, the vacuum coming from the air box will lower the air pressure inside the headlite and should cause the moisture to evaporate. .....bob -
I just posted this on another thread, thought it might help. "Duracool" is a direct replacement for both R12 and R134a, cools better than R12 and is cheaper than R134a. "One of the problems that gets overlooked when converting R12 to R134a is that the molecules of R134a are a lot smaller than R12 and will eventually leak thru the rubber hoses meant for R12. R134a systems use neoprene hoses. There is a product called "Duracool" do a search on google to find a supplier. Duracool is based on a propane derivative, similar to whats been used in Europe for many years. It is heavier than R12, cools better than R12 and only costs about $7 a can and most systems will only need 2 cans. You don't have to change anything (unless parts defective) it is compatible with both R12 & R134a. ....bob"

$295 is still a good price compared to a new one. Mine has been running for over 1 year now and the quality is just like the original. ..... bob -

The unit repaired by Mikodo was exactly the same colour, font as the original Lexus. They replaced burned out bulbs, cleaned etc. (2 year warranty) .......bob Mikado Technology 1435 Huntington Ave #C S. San Francisco, Ca 94080 -
This is more of a "preventive maintenance" suggestion. I read on another "Lexus" forum that the tach/speedo illumination was designed to operate at a max of 12 volts. Under normal operating conditions your bat/alt run at 14+ volts, adjusting (dimming) the brightness may extend the life expectancy of the display. I think dusLS400 makes a good point about contacting the NHTSA (1-888-327-4236) re: factory defective parts. I think we should also advise them about the clock/climate control. With over 500 visits to this "thread" it appears to be a common complaint. I wonder if there is a Canadian equivalent of the NHTSA? cheers, bob

Hi Gerry, I wanted a spoiler for the rear of my 92 LS400 and looked for months to find one that would fit. I went to an auto recycler and found one that looked good, they didn't know what it was off of. Took it home and tried it on, it was as though it was made for the car. It appears to be from an 88-89 Ford Escort GT. Looks great and only cost about $50 US. -bob

Hi folks, Had a call from Eddy at Mikado this afternoon. Someone from British Columbia sent in an A/C display for repair and did not provide a return address. Since I was his only Canadian customer (Manitoba) he thought I might know who sent it. I hope all Americans don't think Canada is that small? Anyway, please call Ed @ (650) 615-9966 or e-mail me. PS: It was sent via DHL, they could not provide a return address either. -

I finally got it repaired. My wife went on a little vacation, so her car was not being used. Mikado did an excellent job, repaired the LCD and replaced some burned out lights. It was fixed and returned (to Canada) within 4 days. Highly recommended. Thanks for all the info, bob -
Hi, I had an O2 sensor go bad, this puts on the "check engine" lite and disabled the traction control. Sensor was easy to replace, the "code "will tell you which one. It is like changing a spark plug, only it is in your exhaust pipe. bob

I know I would appreciate a quick lesson. There is usually only half a dozen screws and clips, finding them and in which order is the problem. thanks bob -

UCF3, Got an e-mail back from Jim Steele at United Radio Services. Jim says they "do not" repair these controls. He doesn't know who will repair them. They fix some GM inst clusters but not Lexus, too bad! Bob
