  1. I live in Vancouver, BC and I think it's one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I live close to the city centre, and there are 3 ski hills within a 30 minute drive. The massive ski resort of Whistler/Blackcomb which is rated #1 in North America is a 2.5 hour drive away (1.5hr if I drive!). With our climate, one can golf in the afternoon and go skiing at night, as it rarely snows in the city. Snow behaves itself and falls on the mountains usually.

Vancouver is unique in that there are 100,000 people living in the downtown area within a 15 minute walk to the financial district, so rush hour is not as bad as in other major metropolises.

Did I mention water costs every household a flat fee of $250/annum whether you live in a 600 sq.ft condo or a 14,000 sq.ft mansion? There are NO water meters on any house in the city. We have three water reservoirs, each capable of sustaining the city by itself. One of which tends to get turbid after a big rainfall due to logging in the watershed. Duh.

I read in the newspaper a few years ago that the annual crime rate for the city of Vancouver is equal to that of ONE week in LA.

Medicare costs $55 per adult monthly and all doctor visits are free as are hospital stays. If one's income is lower than a certain amount, even the medicare costs are subsidized by the government. Woman having a baby? Free. Need to have emergency bypass surgery? Free. Breast augmentation? User pays.:(

I'm not a multi-millionaire by any means, but I'm not struggling, either.

My opinion is that if one is wealthy, quality of life in the US might be better than in Canada-although one must contend with the much higher crime rate- but if you are of the middle class, than life in Canada just might be better.

  2. So, all you alienated Yankees...come up to the world of crappy baseball (bye, bye Expos!), a pro football league that consists of 6 teams(!) and high taxes (at least the taxes go to a useful cause). The economy of the country is first world, but the military is third world, though. Help our economy and raise our dollar so I can go to Seattle for some cheap shopping!

    WHY MOVE TO CANADA?

Reasons to move to Canada, as cited by www.canadianalternative.com:

    1. Canada has universal public health care.

    2. Canada has no troops in Iraq.

    3. Canada signed the Kyoto Protocol environmental treaty.

    4. More than half of Canada's provinces allow same-s*x marriage.

    5. The Canadian Senate recommends legalizing marijuana.

    6. Canada has no law restricting abortion.

    7. Canada has strict gun laws and relatively little violence.

    8. The United Nations has ranked Canada the best country to live in for eight consecutive years.

    9. Canada abolished the death penalty in 1976.

    10. Canada has not run a federal deficit since 1996-97.

  3. Now, the 2 term limit doesn't have to be consecutive, so Bush Sr. could run again if he wanted to.

The only time a president gets to serve more than 8 years in office is if heis the VP and becomes president because of something happening to the president. And even then only if the outgoing (or dead) president has something like half or less of their term remaining can the VP run himself for re-election twice.

I'll bet Mr. Carter would win by a landslide if he ran again.

So, Johnson & Ford had the potential to serve more than 8 years, then.

Thanks for the enlightening, SW!

PS....no one in the Bush administration has denied any of the claims in F/911. I agree that Moore did edit the film to his own agenda, though.

  4. Personally i think its assinine  -  it's daytime - if you can't see me during the day without my lights on - then you shouldn't be driving - thats how i feel about them - but thats just my opinion!

A car with DRL on is much more visible to not only other drivers, but to pedestrians. What if your kid crossing the street was hit by a car that would otherwise have been visible sooner if it had DRL? What if YOU were the driver of the car that hit a kid when he/she started to cross the street because he/she did not see you in time? Would you still oppose them? There is a reason why Canada made them mandatory, and why GM has made them standard on USDM cars.

If you oppose them, then I think YOU should not be driving. That's how I feel, but that's just my opinion! :censored:

  5. I have a loaded 1997 ES300 with the AVS. My good buddy has a loaded 1997 ES300 without the AVS. With the AVS set to comfort mode, the ride is noticeably smoother that when it is in sport mode, but the car wallows & dips much like a Detroit boat. I use comfort mode when I have a fully loaded car, as I think passengers appreciate a smoother ride. I usually keep it in one of the two middle settings.

At the sport setting, the ride is still smooth, but ruts, and expansion joints will manifest themselves more through the cabin. I test drove a 2004 Acura TL a month ago, and my opinion is that the TL's ride is harsher than the ES's AVS set to sport. The handling does not change, so it is not as quick handling as the TL. I absolutely love the TL and its power. I would buy one if I wasn't so spoiled by the ES's smoothness. The TL is definitely more sporty than the ES. No opinion on the G35, as I have not driven it.

My friend's ES without the AVS seems to do everything well, but it's just some of those rare instances when you want an ultra-smooth ride, or a firmer ride when AVS comes in handy. The AVS's second setting after comfort is like what a non-AVS equipped ES is like.

    Hope this helps! :)

  6. Nice Car!

I just sold my Ford Contour and bought a 94 ES 300, lol about ditching your  contour for a lexus...

So what if it is an older model...I took mine to the dealership on Monday to get the oil changed and see if I could get a copy of the maintenance history (11 pages...almost all PM! only major probs were dead batteries (2) and a leaking transmission pan @ 60k!)...there must have been 35 cars there for service that morining, and mine was the oldest one there!  It was funny though b/c everybody thought that I was the original owner and kept asking me questions about how well it was holding up and how great it still looks LOL....

what kind of contour? SE? GL? was it the 4 cylinder or V6? manual? Auto?

i know alot (and i do mean ALOT) about those cars. i also know the cheif of R&D at ford who designed the CDW-27 platform. that platform is now used on the following cars:

    Jaguar X type

    Mazda 6

    Mazda 3

    Ford Escape

    Ford Escort ZX2

    Mercury Cougar

    Mercury Mystique

    Lincoln LS

and of course, the ford contour :P

and i had no intention of getting rid of it, i still dont. i didnt ditch it. i think i will save up the $850 and have the core supports pulled back into place, then start replacing the little *BLEEP* as i have time.

BTW, my contour now runs fine, apparently the fuel sutoff switch was activated when i wrecked, it didnt get any gas LOL.

The Mazda3 and the Mazda6 do not share platforms, I am sure.
