Some drives are just picky and don't read backup discs well.
-
Let me know if you can't find it. I have instructions on how to access and remove the disc. Good luck!

DRM - Digital Rights Management
Then you will stop buying itunes tracks.
-
Before you pull the fuse and clear the memory, test the hybrid disc to make sure you can navigate and enter destinations. Then you can know if the disc was made properly. After, you should be able to load the 5.1 firmware if the disc is working correctly.
-
You can do the upgrade yourself. Buy the dvd, remove the original dvd, and insert the new one, and that will begin the update.
You can usually get the disc for around $250 - $300 from the dealer or from ebay.

Hi Step Hen for whatever reason I cannot send you a pm can you give me instructions on how to create a hybrid disk for 8.1 thanks your help is most appreciated
Ed
Ed, you needed 2 posts or more to send a pm. I followed the same instructions creating the 8.1 hybrid as found for the 7.1 hybrid, simply replacing the loading.kwi file with the one found onthe 5.1 disc. Be sure you have the loading.kwi file from the same gen nav system though.
Stephen has posted his email on this forum several times so I don't think he will mind:discquestions AT gmail DOT com
Thanks for the assist.

You are stuck with the same graphics even though you upgrade the nav disc. The 2006 GS was the only year they used the gen4 system, which has a lower resolution screen and is unable of producing the crisp graphics on the gen5 systems.

Just bot an 06 GX470 w Nav.
Can I update w a 5 gen 7.1v, #86271-53022?
Nope you need a gen4 disc.
-
You may want to check the daylights savings time settings, but I think that the nav gets it's time information from the GPS signal...

1 - Is there a downside when using a hybrid disk? Are any features lost that appear in later versions? Does the appearance of any of the screens change? etc.
2 - Does the override that becomes available also allow full use of the Bluetooth telephone interface?
As an aside, although purchasing a 2009 (it is still 2008) model with only 25 miles on it would have led me to believe it would have included the latest DVD, it did not. It came with ver 7.1. The build date was August and I believe that was before version 8.1 was issued. We have already approached the dealer about this but have not heard back from them. So far the dealer has been exceptionally accommodating and professional (a very rare experience) so I am anxious to see what they do.
1- Because you are downgrading to older software, the Warning Message will not go away on it's own on startup, and instead you will have to press an I Agree button each time your start the vehicle. But since you are most likely going to activate the override menu, you would be touching the screen anyway. You can also press the radio button to bypass the I Agree button.
2- I believe that depends on the vehicle as it is executed differently on the different models. Some will and some won't.
The 2009 ES350 loaner I received a few days ago had the 8.1 disc, but I didn't check the production date. The 8.1 disc just went on sale in November, and perhaps the disc wasn't ready for your vehicle in time. It's usually up to the dealer's discretion to upgrade the system, so you are taking the best approach. Good luck!

Though you have switch the navigation dvd, the newer software is already installed on the navigation system. When you insert the 5.1, the nav system realizes that it has a higher software version number, and so does not load the software present on that disc. Therefore the override menu is still not present.
You have to CLEAR the software from the nav system, and then install the software on the 5.1 disc. You can remove the nav system fuse for 5 minutes with no disc present in the drive. Then reinsert the fuse, power up the car, and then the nav system should ask for a disc to load the software. Then insert the 5.1.
You will most likely notice that a lot of streets will be missing. That's why people run hybrid discs, to retain all the new streets that are added each year. Send me a pm if you're interested for more info.

Bainzey, you have a generation 2/3 navigation system, which never lost the override hack.
The OP has a 2009 RX350 with a Generation 5 system, which lost access to the override menu after 5.1. To regain this feature, he has to either use a 5.1 disc, or can use a hybrid 8.1/5.1 disc.
I've finally gotten the 8.1/5.1 disc to work with the generation 5 system.

Took in the GS for the second time today to get the rattle fixed. It was gone after the first try, but the rattle came back louder and more frequent than before with the onset of cold weather. If the rattle can be reproduced easily, then I would just schedule the service and let the dealership deal with it. Only if the tech couldn't reproduce the problem or the dealership was unhelpful would I go looking for a TSB.
The car will be ready tomorrow, so I'm keeping the 09 ES350. Nice ride and good interior. The nav screen makes me cry though seeing how nice the graphics are on the gen 5 system....

Wow, thanks for that info. I have been on the fence on upgrading to 8.1 since I didn't know what was updated, but this should make the decision easy.

I would recommend checking out ebay (make sure it's an original OEM disc), or Sewell Lexus usually has the best dealer prices around.

There are a lot of improvements and updates with each year's update, so I would be confident that in 6 years time, they will have added the area around you. You may want to see if you can find the denso (disc manufacturer) website to see if you can check which areas are covered.
-
Yes, you can remove update the navigation system by removing the original disc, and inserting the new disc. This will update the software on the nav, and then you're set to run off the new map data. The drive is located in the lower right hand side of the trunk.

You don't stack the boards face to face, but rather bottom to bottom. Two stacks of two and then you have the four boards quoted by the systems.
You usually offset the boards in a stack differently: say top board would have the bindings in the front and middle of the racks, and the bottom board have the bindings in the middle and behind the rack.
Like bainzey said though, you would have to make sure the bindings either folded or were short enough not to hit the roof (the board facing down).
I've had 4 boards fit on the thule flat rack systems, but it was tight fit. If you have a wide board, or if any of your friends do, four boards may not fit.

I just got a 2002 LS430. The GPS maps are pitiful. Ho do you know what the correct software to get is and how do I go about updating the maps??
You need to check to make sure you get the correct generation dvd. Your 2002 LS430 can use a generation 2/3 dvd. Don't expect too many changes though from the overall format. Just new map data and some better routing algorithms.

By upgrading to version 8.1, the I Agree button will disappear on startup, and will be replaced by a warning message.
Yes, you will lose the override menu with version 8.1. You need to replace the loading.kwi file.
Send me an email (address located in my profile), or make another post and I can then send you a private message through the board.

I would pull the main radio unit out and check the wiring's condition and see if any connections have become loose

Hi Just picked up my 09 RX 350 and already annoyed by navigation. What is hybrid disc and how can I get/make oneand will it void warranty? Please help
I would recommend searching the forums or with google the words hybrid disc for more info, but bacially a hybrid disc reinstalls older software onto the Lexus navigation system. This older software allows access to an override menu that allows destination input while in motion, by inputting a series of buttons each time you start the vehicle. It is called a hybrid disc because you combine that older navigation software with the newest map data from a later navigation disc.

Has anyone upgraded their gps dvd yet?
How do you remove old one and put in new dvd ?
Is that it just take old dvd out and replace with new dvd, or is there more to it ?
Yup, as easy as removing the old disc and inserting the new one. You may have the system where the screen folds down. Then the disc would be ejected from there. Otherwise it would most likely be in the trunk area.
-
If you upgrade to version 6.1 or later, you will not be able to override the system. You can run a hybrid disc that has the 5.1 software and the latest map data and then still be able to use the override menu. I'll send you some more info.
