  1. The catalytic converter doesn't have a lot of platinum/paladium, but rather the price for these metals is astronomically high now along with the other commodities.

    Spot prices for July:

    Paladium: $389

    Platinum: $1731

Remember, we are talking per ounce and not per pound!

  2. If it was a one owner car, try and ask the owner for some more details. Of course a closer visual inspection of that area is warranted.

Carfax should never be a deal-maker or deal-breaker. Carfax doesn't list all accidents/damage as it only shows what has been REPORTED. So a car can have a clean carfax and could have been in a severe accident. Just use it as one more tool when used-car shopping. It could have been a minor fender bender.. Check for paint overspray for the extent of the repair and definitely check the seam gaps to make sure they are consistent throughout.

  3. The maintenance required light is more a general reminder that your service interval is soon approaching / has gone by. You will most likely just need to reset it if you have done the recommended maintenance yourself, or did the work at an indy that didn't reset the light.

I think you may be confusing that light with the Check Engine Light (CEL) that has codes associated with the error causing the problem. You would need an OBD II device to read those codes, or head to AZ as suggested above.

The steps to reset the service reminder light should be in your manual, or can be found on this forum.

  4. Unfortunately the 7.1/5.1 hybrid disc will not work in a generation 4 system! the gen 5 and gen 2/3 systems can work with this disc.

I have read in another thread that a gen 4 user was successful with a 7.1/4.1 disc, but it was created differently than this method (ie the loading.kwi isn't the only file changed).

  5. You can create a special disc and replace the newer navigation software with the 5.1 loading software (the last version where the override menu was available), which would then let you retain the override menu with the latest map data (ie a 7.1/5.1 disc).
