  1. I never had this issue before when I had my 2006 ES 330, but with my 2010 ES 350, when parking in a regular parking spot in a parking lot (NOT parallel park), even though it looks to me from my vantage point in the driver's seat that my window sill is parallel to the painted line on the ground for the neighboring parking spot, when I actually get out of the car, the car is parked crooked and not parallel at all to the painted line. So what I have found myself doing is that I compensate for this by deliberately parking at an angle (relative to my window sill and neighboring spot's painted line) and this seems to result in a straighter parking. Anyone else experieces this or is it just me?
  2. I guess there is no solution for this at this time. I feel that Lexus should modify the software to do this: If Reverse is engaged, show rear view image on screen. If car is already moving (gas pedal depressed), disable all inputs to the NAV unit for safety purposes. If Reverse is engaged, but car is NOT moving (gas pedal NOT depressed), allow all inputs of the NAV to be operational. If you press Climate when Reverse is engaged but car is NOT moving, show the Climate screen. The moment your car starts moving when Reverse is engaged (gas pedal depressed), display the rear view image on the screen regardless of what screen it was displaying before.
  3. I start the car. I engage the gear on reverse but my foot is still on the brake. The car has not moved yet. I decide it's too hot, so I hit the Climate button and select my A/C fan level. I am ready to take my foot off the brake to reverse the car, but the rear view camera's image is no longer on screen. How do I bring the rear view camera's image up on the screen on demand? (Other than putting the gear back to Neutral and then back to Reverse.)
  4. If the AFS button is set to turn it off, there will be a warning displayed on the instrument panel. I tried using the button on my wife's ES350 because I didn't think hers were working either. I don't drive her car at night very much, if the AFS is working it is not obvious to me. I read in some document that they turn more to the right than they do to the left, but I don't remember where I read that. John Correct. In a left-hand turn, the left headlamp will pivot up to 15 degrees (the right-hand headlamp remains pointed straight ahead) and in a right-hand turn, the right headlamp will pivot up to 5 degrees (the left-hand headlamp remains pointed straight ahead). So, sort of like this.... Anyway, I can't tell if my 2010 ES 350 is doing this or not.
  5. I think no one is contending that an In-build NAV is great. I think we are just saying that the Navigation aspect of the Lexus NAV system sucks compared to, say, Garmin's. I really HATE it when it doesn't give enough voice feedback before the next turn. All it says is something like: - "In 1 mile, turn right on Foobar Street" (that's good) - When you actually approach the turn, all it says is "Next right" (but there are cases where there are 2 right turns next to each other, or that right turn immediately splits into a fork, and it doesn't tell you exactly which one to take....this happened when I was going from McLean, VA, to Old Town Alexandria a few weeks ago)
  6. Yeah, correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Preferences can be set only for the SELECTED route. You have to actually pick a route before you can choose Preferences for it, or to Preview the animation. I don't think there is a place to set the preferences globally (but Garmin does :P ).
  7. I did use a soft brush (not make-up brush though) for my previous ES 330 before and I saw that it was mostly just pushing the dust particles around--especially if it's in the crevices of the gear stick housing. I'll check out the Sonus stuff.
  8. Hi timzter. The lights begin to move if you're driving more than 15 clicks/hr, and they do move quite well, the passenger side for me anyways and not the driver side...hence the reason for the post :( By the way, I just noticed that you have the 2010 ES350, I don't believe they have the AFS on your model. Well, mine is the 2010 ES 350 with the $4,955 Nav++ package. If you go through the "Build your own Lexus" on their website, after you're done, this is what you'd see. and AFS is mentioned in the Summary, but I honestly don't really notice the headlights turning left/right as I make turns.
  9. Does the duster you purchased at AutoZone use static electricity to attract the dust? I haven't used any of the Swiffer products but wondering if they actually work as advertised, that is, the dust sticks to the cloth as you wipe the surface. Has anyone used it?
  10. What is the best way to deal with dust collecting on the dashboard, console, gear stick area, cup holder area, etc.? How do detailers do it?
  11. Hmm...I never noticed that my headlights actually move left-right as I turn a corner. I can't tell if it does or not. How can you really test that? Is it because it doesn't move left-right if you're driving too slowly during the turn?
  12. I have to agree with all the negatives that have been said about the Lexus Nav. I was sent an online survey by Lexus recently in response to my purchasing the 2010 ES350 in January. I specifically mentioned that I was not happy with the Nav. It is correct that my cheap Garmin does a better job, 3D view and all. I was trying to get from Mclean, VA, to Old Town Alexandria, VA, recently and my Lexus Nav failed to take me to my destination without causing me to take a wrong turn. Around the George Washington Pkwy area there is a cluster of roads that snake around each other and one wrong turn would send you somewhere else. I clearly remember the Lexus Nav telling me at one point to keep right. As the road veered to the right, it split into two. I remember having to slow down and deciding which branch of the fork I should take. Since there were cars behind me, I arbitrarily decided to take the fork on the right, but that turned out to be the wrong turn! It took me past the Pentagon and Air Force Memorial. I had to make several more wrong turns to get back on GW Pkwy to Old Town Alexandria. Also, in the event of a wrong turn, my Garmin would say, "Recalculating...." to let me know that I, in fact, made a boo-boo. Even though it is a bit annoying, at least I know I did mess up and learn from the experience. The Lexus Nav, on the other hand, quietly corrects the route, giving you the false impression that you were following the route guidance correctly all along.
  13. I saw a bunch of Rain-X Latitude Wiper Blades at the Lexus Service Center in Rockville, MD, yesterday. Looks like they are advocating these blades instead of the OEM ones? Rain-X Latitude Wiper Blades
  14. The guy at the Lexus Service Center told me that it is not advisable to play with the 'high' and 'low' positions of the wiper manually. If they are in the 'low' (normal) position, and you wish to clean the windshield under the blades, start the car, turn on the wipers and stop them in mid-sweep. In that position, you can easily fold the wiper arm away from the glass to clean the windshield.
  15. I called the Lexus Customer Experience number. They also said that the dealership has to perform ALL the steps for the recall. Can't do only part of it, and no waivers. Those of you who got only the software update lucked out!! Steve, you're right. I called Lexus at Rockville, and they agreed to do only the software update without the pedal/floor modification.

  17. My appointment with Lindsay Lexus in Alexandria, VA, in response to the floormat recall is next week. I just called them to make sure I will be able to just get the software update and NOT the pedal modification nor the floor thinning, with the provision I sign a waiver. At first they said yes, no problem, but then they called me shortly thereafter to tell me that "their boss" said that they won't be able to do that. It is either all or nothing and that they are required by law to apply all the remedial steps as part of the recall. I told them that some people hava brought their ES to the Lexus dealership in Rockville, MD, and they allowed the option to get only the software update without the pedal and floor modification. They said that this is not allowed and that the Rockville dealership can get into trouble for doing this. Talk about mixed messages!! I will call the Lexus Customer Experience number and talk to them about this and find out why some dealerships allow the software update ONLY, while other dealerships require the all-or-nothing approach!
  18. Yes, turning DST off appears to have fixed the issue. But we *ARE* in Daylight Saving Time now (http://www.infoplease.com/spot/daylight1.html) so it should be "ON". No, we are in "Standard Time" now. Read the first sentence of the Web Page you referenced. Daylight Savings time begins March 14th. Duh! Yeah, you're right. Wasn't thinking!

  20. The clock on my dashboard shows the correct local time (Eastern Time). I have checked Settings-->Clock, and it shows Eastern Time with Daylight Savings On. I assume that nav connects to some remote time server to update the time based on my chosen time zone. But when I set my destination to somewhere 15 minutes away from my current location, the estimate time of arrival shown on the screen is 1 hour 15 minutes! So if the current time is 4:00 pm and the destination is 15 minutes away, the estimated time of arrival is 5:15 pm! Where do I correct the nav's system time?
  21. Does anyone know of any self-service car wash places in the DC metroplex (north VA in particular) where you put some money into a machine and you can dispense soap and get several minutes' worth of water from a hose with a *very strong* pressure that you can use to hose down and clean your car with? Looks like this: I only know of 2 places: One is at the gas station at the southeast corner of I-395 and Glebe Rd, but its water pressure is not strong enough; and the other is near a strip mall in Warrenton (can't remember exactly where) but that's too far! If you know of a website that shows such car wash places, please share. I find that touchless drive-thru car wash places don't clean your car very well.
  22. Just an observation from yesterday. After I led the system using voice commands only to successfully pick the person I wanted to call, it said something like, "Press the off-hook icon or say 'Dial' to dial the number." After the beep that followed, I said, "Dial". It responded, "Help...blah blah." It thought I said "Help!" No, I do not have a speech impediment. I definitely said "Dial." My AC was not on, so no fan was blowing. After a few more tries and raising my voice to almost shouting level, it then understood "Dial". Pfft!
  23. OK, I am really confused now. So far, people have been talking about the 2010 ES 350 recall as involving: 1. A software update so that if the brake is applied while the gas pedal is also applied, then the engine cuts off; 2. Shaving the pedal; 3. Thinning the floor. I just called the Lindsay Lexus Service Center in Alexandria, VA, and they told me that the software update is NOT for the 2010 ES 350 but for the HS model only! I countered them several times but they insisted it is only for the HS and that the recall work done on the ES is #2 and #3. Arrrgh! What's the deal?!
  24. When I bought my ES ,the mats were anchored to the seat rail with black plastic ties. I just had the software update last Monday and at my request, no pedal shaving or carpet work .You're the first person to mention of any mat anchoring which is ridiculous. When I bought my ES in January, the mat was anchored to the floor carpet with white plastic ties (think Macy price tags!). I called the Lexus Customer Experience number and they said this should be temporary. After I bring my car in to have things fixed (like you, I only want the software update), they should put in a different mat WITHOUT the plastic ties. I am surprised you still have the plastic ties attached! That looks so tacky.
  25. I haven't upgraded the software yet, but I do agree with you that the Brake Assist doesn't appear to kick in on the 2010 ES 350 compared to my previous 2006 ES 330. On the 2006 ES 330, whenever I went down the hill towards the traffic light and hit the brake slightly to slow down, the brake assist would kick in and I could feel it "helping". But on the 2010 ES 350, traveling on that same stretch of road, it does not do any brake assist anymore. Can anyone suggest a sure-proof way to test the brake assist feature on the 2010 ES 350 to make sure it is actually working?
