  1. I should of known better but I do not have the Autozone shocks in the same direction - one has the shock and one has it down. Can someone share which is the correct orientation? Obviously I have one on correctly.... The hood works fine but I would like to visually correct this. Thanks
  2. Can you share the easiest way to clear codes on a 1995 LS? Thanks
  3. I had a P0136 Bank 1 Sensor 2 failure and replaced the sensor. Should the check engine light go out on its own or will I need to pull one of the fuses to reset it? If I'm way off on this let me know. I also had a P0420 which is a weak cat so this may be the problem??? I have 105K on my 95 LS. Thanks
  4. I just ordered 2 Denso OEM ox sensors off of Ebay $97 delivered - you're correct this is a wear item so I should just change them and move on. Does anyone have a good procedure to remove the sensors? Can I use an open wrench? DO I have to worry about these being frozen in or breaking? Thanks again!
  5. Wow - a scope is beyond me - any other suggestions for a backyard mechanic?
  6. Perhaps I have the very same problem. The check engine light went on and I have a 136 and a 420 code on Bank 1. The 420 points to a weak converter....yikes. I was thinking about replacing both fronts - my Lexus mechanic friend concurs before something more dramatic. I have been running 93 octane for 2 years (as long as I have had my 95. Could this be a bad tank of gas? Before I plunk down about $100 for 2 sensors and some time on the ground I'd appreciate thoughts on the best way to isolate bad gas from a bad sensor. Thanks!
  7. I agree the autozone ones are a bit strong. I was able to hold the hood open with just one. I thing for sure when the hood goes up it stays up unlike the old worn out Lexus stuff. Good to see we have other options.
  8. I just completed the AUtozone $32 fix for both hood shocks on my 95 LS400. I have seen the tutorial with drilling and perhaps I can make a recommendation. If you put the old hood shock in a vice and take a hack saw to the end cutting almost all the way through until hitting the swivel and pry open with a large screwdriver you will not have to drill at all. Following the procedure I ended up braking a bit and it took 30 minutes to do only 1 side. By cutting with a hack saw I finished the other 3 sides in 15 minutes. I put the struts on the hood (12mm wrench) and it is like new. This is an excellent fix and not too painful. I was really tired of the broom prop.
  9. Wow this was too easy (after you all helped). A 10A fuse in the engine compartment labeled "horn" was the culprit. As always appreciate the help. :D
  10. Actually "deamons" means kids in the neighborhood that get a kick out of blowing the horn at 2AM.... I'll look at the fuse box in te AM under the hood. ANy way to test these or to determine which is the horn? Thanks
  11. Thought I would share my experiences on my 95 with you. First the ehad unit was snet out to Nak by Lexus for a month - it came back and the dead right chanel came back. I brought it back in and the found that the head unit and amp were bad. Interesting in that the previous owner had the amp replaced 2 years ago. Both are back and working with my bank account a bit lighter. My friend who is a Lexus mechanic suggested that this system is just bad news and the Pioneer is a reliable choice---sorry to share...
  12. Hi, I'm sure someone can help me through this. Last night one of the local deamons propped a stick between the steering wheel and the headrest - yep the horn does nto work anymore. I looked at the white fuse box under the dash and did not see anything for the horn. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  13. Hi, I decided that the "dance" with the Lexus dealer was way to painful. They wanted to invest hours of labor to "rule out" otherr things which in the end subsidized the contribution by Lexus to satisfy me. I purchased an ECU from a bone year car-part.com and will put it in soon. The cost for a used one of the right vintage was $140 delivered. Hope this helps.
  14. Hi, I have a 95 with similar problems - jerking at particular speeds. The plugs wer replaced, the TPS replaced and Lexus wants several hours to rule out possibly a fuel pump or bad EGR before offering relief on a replacement ECM (perhaps $300 in labor before relief) . I'm about ready to purchase a bone yard ECM for about $150 with the correct vintages posted earlire. If anone else has suggestions please let me know.
  15. Thanks for the update. I thought the 50303 was for the 96 and I could not find any delaership that would confirm that it would work (2 no, 1 yes and 1 maybe). Well you proved that one dealership was right!. I'm going to try to get Lexus to come through with a replacement - if not it's the bone yard. Thanks for all the help with this one. I just want the ol LS to run like it should..
  16. You may want to look at the TPS thread (today) on thsi topic. I would first look at the air filter. I changed mine and the problem greatly improved. I will be replacing the TPS this weekend and will let you know if that helps. Everything else for tune-up was replaced and this did not solve the problem. FYI the 95 ECM may or may not work with the 96 ECM. I called several dealers and did not reach consensus... You may wish to check with Lexus using your VIN and they will guide you to what is an exact replacement. Instead of buying new (about $1450) I would get a bone yeard ECM with an exact matching number and warranty. I have seen the ECM for $125-$250. Installation does not look painful but I'm not sure how the key FOB reprogramming will go. Hope this helps..
  17. I'M A BIT CONFUSED ON THIS ONE. THE LEXUS BULLETIN IS FOR 1996 HOWEVER YOU HAVE A 95. WHY WAS LEXUS WILLING TO WORK THIS FOR YOU? I'M AT THE POINT OF ECM REPLACEMENT AS NOTHING ELSE HAS SOLVED THE JERKY TRANSMISSION PROBLEM AND THE PRICE IS JUST REDICULOUS UNLESS YOU FIND ONE AT THE BONE YARD AND FIGURE OUT HOW TO REPROGRAM IT FOR THE KEY FOBS. THANKS
  18. I have a well maintained 95 and mine is periodically doing the same thing. I suggest that you check the fluid level, make certain that there are no codes (possible throttle position sensor problem) or it could be the ECM which there is a bulletin on. I've replaced pluigs and the TPS will be next. After these its the ECM as the trans has been tested and they are pretty much bulletproof.
  19. I'm stumped. I need to replace the rear tail ight on my 95 LS400. The bulb is not in the trunk lid and I assume is behind the trunk liner. Well I removed the corner of the liner and it looks like there is a cable with a rubber seal leading out of the trunk into the light. The cable will not come out and I can't figure out how to get to the bulb. ANy thoughts? Thanks as always!
  20. Hey - I'll try anythig once. I hate to pay $100 per hour to put in a $15 filter. How to I get access to it? DO I have to take off the left rear wheel? I looked under the car and tried to follow the fuel line but I could not find the filter. Thanks
  21. I picked up a replacement fuel filter and can't find and reference to a replacemtn procedure on the forum. Can someone help? Thanks!
  22. Thank you very much for the advice. I replaced the plugs with new ND ones even though they had only 30K miles on them and the problem has not reappeared in the last couple of days. I'm not sure if I should replace the throttle position sensor since I picked it up from irontoad.com but if the problem comes back I'm headed to the dealer with some ammo. Appreciate everyones help.
  23. Wow - I dodn't know that Lexus would come through on a replacement ECM on a pro-rated basis. I have found a bone yard ECM for about $150 but I really did not want to go there. Can you share with us how you managed to get Lexus to come through on this one? I had a similar problem with my 95 dying when coming to a stop after extended high speed. The problem was a dirty air filter - yea I should have known better. Please let me know how you "worked" Lexus. Thanks!
  24. Wow - now I have more than I can possibly digest. Thanks. I have been told that a TPS can fail without throwing out codes. I'll report on this one the cahnge is made. THANKS
  25. Certainly appreciate sharing the lexus service manual. I was told that you have to "tune in" the TPS and I have found Toyota specs for a V-6 but not the Lexus V8. Can I also ask there appears to be two sensors opposite the throttle cable - one is to what I believe to be the choke and the other seems to be closer to the engine and tied into the throttle plate. Can you confirm that the latter is the TPS? Unfortunately the replacement ND part looks exactly lik the other two and the part number has changed since the production date. Thanks again
