  1. I had the same problem. Dead LCD, no heat, no A/C, no indicators. Nothing. I took it to the dealer and prepared for the worst. Supposedly a wire was knocked loose when I had my head and amplifier replaced. The diagnostics took awhile and that's what cost the most. The good part was that I didn't need a new LCD or climate control unit which would be really expensive. Nowe all I need to do is replace one -- actually I'll probably do all 3 -- bulbs. I have the Lexus Part number. Does anyone have the Toyota part number? There are more Toyota dealers than there are Lexus dealers.
  2. i just put a millen intake in my 93 sc400 yesterday. it took 4 months to get it and about a half an hour to install. the instructions were pretty useless. i have questions and don't know who to go to ... i don't see much of a difference in the performance with the millen intake. at least not $300 worth! if i had it to do again, i'd do a BFI or get a cheap intake from e-bay. i think i'm going to wind up doing a BFI anyway.
  3. i replaced my nak head because i wanted a cd changer and didn't need a cassette player. my old one works - at least it did when i had it removed. the rear amp had gone and the rear speakers were shot, too. i wound up getting a new head, rear amp and speakers. i'll send you the nak head - if it works we can talk about a price. i have no use for it so i'm not going to be greedy about it.
  4. Jim Walker [lex-pert] will only do lcds for our car if he can get 50 orders in 4 months. Otherwise, its not worth his while. Does anyone beside me need one?
  5. that's the first place i looked and the cigarette lighter is okay. i'm just hoping i didn't fry the whole assembly some other way ... like it wasn't the faulty plug at all. the climate control was dying and the lcd was the first step. thanks for responding.
  6. i was using a faulty power cable for a palm pilot. now none of the climate controls work - the buttons light up, the lcd lights up without the graphics, etc. -- but the on/off bulb doesn't shine ... i'm thinking i shorted out something. i checked the fuses and they seem to be ok. every else works so i'm guessing that its the square 'switch' or whatever its called that's located in the fuse box and marked heater. at least i hope that's it. 1- does it sound like a switch? 2- is that what its called - feel like a nitwit not knowing? 3- can i get the one i have tested before i buy a new one? also, my lcd was on its way out anyway --- is changing the whole panel a big deal because i'm getting the impression that you can't just replace the lcd. thanks for your help. this is a great forum and i love my car.
  7. I was told that the antifreeze disolves silicone. if it does at least it takes awhile so you should be okay. i'd keep spare anti-freeze/water in the trunk just in case.
  8. I had the same problem and the previous owner had tried to repair it with silicone caulk. it seemed to be effective but it looked like crap. i bit the bullet and bought a new one from the dealer for about $250. it took 20 minutes to replace. i did it myself and i'm not a mechanic by any stretch. i also changed the switch -- i called it a sensor, too and i was corrected -- which probably wasn't necessary. supposedly there's an aftermarket reservoir made for a mustang that'll fit but i couldn't find it on the internet.
  9. I have 93 SC400 - one of my very few complaints is that rain/wiper fluid comes right into the driver side window and onto me. Other than that - the car is perfect. I've seen windvisors for soarers on ebay and elsewhere. Does anyone have any experience with these? Do they fit, etc.?
  10. I have 93 SC400 with 75,000 miles on it. I've had the car since Thanksgiving and really like it. I wanted to get a tune-up and price the timing belt replacement. I wanted to get it done right so I bit the bullet and went to the dealership. I was pleasantly surprised by the reasonable cost, the efficient handling and a free loaner car. They couldn't have been better. Forget Jiffy Lube - I'd rather go to Warnock and have peace of mind.
  11. i have a 93 sc400. when i got it 6 months ago everything under the hood was spotless - with the exception of the coolant tank. the previous owner had tried to caulk the leaks and it looked like $#)&*#. over the weekend i replaced the tank and the "switch" - i thought it was a sensor but they called it a switch. i got the tank [$180] and the switch [$90] from the dealer. i'm sure i could have gotten it cheaper elsewhere. it took less than 20 minutes to do the work and i'm no mechanic. i drained all the coolant i could using a spritzer from an old [cleaned] windex bottle. i put a pan to catch any dripping coolant under the car. there was one [10mm?] bolt to remove from the top. that being loosened, i could pull the whole tank up slightly to loosen the lower hose. less than a pint of coolant drained into the pan - not the geiser i feared. i loosened the upper hose and removed the entire tank. once i installed the new switch on the new tank - i have no idea why the switch isn't snapped together -- i installed everything in reverse order. topping up the coolant took a little time because i was paranoid about doing something wrong. i sat and watched for the warning light and temperature guage for longer than i really needed to. i can't believe how well these cars are put together. i though my acura was good!
  12. i have a 93 sc400. i love it. i had some work on the radio done and the console was taken apart ... several times as a matter of fact. Now the light under the little screen that indicates the heater/ac temperature etc. is not working on one side. it appears to be a bad bulb but i'm sure its more complicated than that. is this something that's easily replaced? i plan on putting in a soarer cupholder anyway - so has anyone dealt with this before?
  13. What about the little window covering the heater controls? The one on my 93 sc400 has some superficial scuffs, etc. Will these work, too? Maquires Scratch-X Megs #17 Plastic Cleaner/#10 Clear Plastic Polish Has anyone replaced that piece? I mean is it attached to the cover or electronic component? I don't want to louse up my beautiful car!
  14. does anyone have an ideas on how to "revitalize" the wood that's 12 years old? i just got inserts for the radio/center console/door controls. they're ultra shiny. the old stuff is kind of dreary. i tried polishing the old stuff. next i'll use a less shiny - maybe matte finish polish on the new stuff. before i get too agressive i wanted to see if anyone else had any success.
  15. I saw someone test a product called exp4 on the speed channel a couple of weekends ago. i don't remember the vehicle but they got a 5% hp increase from two bottles -- one oil treatment and one gas treatment. the increase was attributed to the product's ability to cool things down - the engine -- whatever. i put in a bottle of each last night. i had a full tank of gas and and oil change not too long ago. maybe i'm crazy but it seems like Mountain Dew for cars. its like the difference between having the ECT on and off ... here's the site: http://www.exp4additives.com/products/?feature=1 it sure made more of a difference than upgrading the air filter to a k&n. i'm satisfied with it.
  16. The sirius antenna is mounted on the trunk lid. it looks like a dell mouse. i don't really like it to tell you the truth. i got it where i got the rest of the equipment/installation. it was about $50. the ipod doesn't sound like a bad idea either.
  17. i have a 93 sc400 and i replaced the head, the rear speakers and the amplifier a couple of months ago. i don't like a changer so i got a kenwood cd player that came with a free sirius tuner. i had to buy the sirius antenna for $50. supposedly anything in the back is a nuisance to work on and because backseat has to be removed. satellite radio is really nice. i have sirius, but i'm sure xm is just as good. the kenwood head and speakers and the jl amplifier are nice but they aren't as robust as the nakamichi. what did it all cost? about $1200 plus a years service from sirius for about $150. that was including the installation at about $65/hour. it was easily worth it since i spend so much time in the car. you could probably do it in stages to save some money. remember, there's going to be a big gap when you remove the OEM radio. i've always gone to places like circuit city or best buy for an installation. this time i went to a regular adult installer - you know - career installers - and i was much happier with the results/advice/value for the money.
  18. call me a wise@$$ but are you planning on doing neuro-surgery in your car or something? don't you think xenon would be overwhelmingly bright?
  19. what will a torque converter do? i saw rod millen on tv last week so i thought i'd take a look at his products. that was one of them - a torque converter. i've heard of mods from bfi to exhaust and chips and all of that - but this is the first i've heard on torque converters.
  20. its easy. like changing the brita waterfilter. i'm a middle-aged woman and i put the k&n filter in my sc400 in about 30 seconds. i got for about $52 on the internet. i can't remember the vendor's name. frankly, i don't see that much of a difference but it'll go 50,000 miles between cleanings and it lasts forever. that's better than $7 here and there for a disposable filter. i did the CAI in my previous car - an acura integra -- and if nothing else it made the car a lot louder. that might not be your 'cup of tea' on the lexus.
  21. i don't have a digital camera, otherwise i'd post a picture. i think the oem looked a lot better - but i know some of you guys like all the buttons displays, etc. i like a more simple control panel. the antenna is placed on the rear trunk. it looks like a computer mouse and i'm not too enthused with it. it seems to be working well. supposedly, they'd done the same installation on other SCs so its a good location. i took it through a car wash and it was fine, too. the satellite radio is really nice to have -- i'll say that much. no commercials and clear consistant reception. oh - and it has a remote control too. i don't know if its any safer. its supposed to be safer.
  22. i have a 93 sc400 which came with the nakamichi system. i love the car but i don't need a cassette player and i don't like a cd changer. the rear speakers also didn't work but the subwoofer was fine. supposedly the stereo is a real headache to install. last week i went shopping. this is what i got: kenwood cd-receiver kdc-x769 kenwood speakers in the back sirius tuner jl amplifier in the back. what did it cost? with installation and a year of Sirius service well over a grand - but it is a lexus. the head unit is a little busy looking -- you need a phd work it correctly. the satellite radio is a nice convenience, too. the head unit folds up and retracts into the dashboard when you turn off the ignition. between that and the steering wheel ... its like being in a spaceship. the old head unit is free to anyone who pays the shipping. i'll take out the change when the weather gets warmer.
  23. i've had a 93 sc400 since thanksgiving and i love it. i noticed a repetitive clunking noise when i reverse out of a parking space while turning the wheel. it seems to come from the rear and only seems to be when the car is not warmed-up -- the engine is warmed up -- but not everything else --- its only when the car is turning and not even a really sharp turn. other than that - the car goes great. no pulling. nothing. do this sound familiar to anyone. I'm hoping that something needs lubricating and the cold weather is a factor.
  24. yes, calvin l is very nervy considering he's new to the club.
