  1. I suggest you take a look at the discussion string entitled "who has the most miles". You'll find that many folks are putting in excess of 200K miles on these engines without much difficulty. The Lexus is an excellent vehicle and is built to last. If you're only putting on 10,000 miles a year, you'll probably be driving the car for a loooong time. The GS is nice, but I prefer the LS.
  2. I feel like a little baby here. I've got 73,000 miles on my 1996, but it's good to know that I'm good for at least another 200K.
  3. I had a variation of this problem. I have generally good reception, but couldn't pull a jazz station I like out of Philly. That was definitely a problem since I could get the station in the car I had previously. I wound up putting in satellite radio which is excellent. Now I can listen to the same stations coast to coast!
  4. I'd also be wary of any electrical system problems that might crop up. I don't think there's much you can do about those until when and if they crop up.
  5. I have a question, which may have been asked somewhere before. Does everyone feel that the LS has continued in the vein of being a high quality car with the lastest generation? Do you think the quality of the 430 and the 460 exceeds both generations of the LS400?
  6. I also like the fact that my LS has a powerful V-8 engine yet gets me routinely 20+ mpg in city/highway driving. I had a Maxima before getting this car and those mpg are comparable with my Max. I agree that the car is built like a tank which makes the mpg all the more amazing.
  7. The LS is simply like no other car I've had. Comfortable. smooth, reliable. I don't see myself driving anything else. It's been nearly a year since I bought the car and I'm still finding excuses to drive it.
  8. You're making me wish I had the time and talent to do what you've done. Looking forward to seeing the pictures.
  9. I had belt unravel on a tire last week and while getting them changed, noticed the the previous owner (or the dealer where I bought the car) has tires with an S speed rating on the car. I could have killed myself driving on these tires. It just never occurred to me to inspect the tires to ensure that tires with the correct speed rating were on the car. This is a lesson that I won't forget.
  10. I'd try to get him to reduce it a bit, but at 37k miles, that car is virtually brand new. Whatever premium you pay, would come out in the wash considering you'll be able to get 200K+ miles out of the car
  11. LOL....you're like me when it comes to my LS. I've had it nearly a year and the honeymoon is still not over. At this point, I doubt it will ever end. Sage advice on major work prior to a trip without the opportunity to test. I'd hate to be a couple of thousand miles away from home with an issue. I do a lot of driving and I'm going to have nearly 90K miles on this car within the next six months, so my dilemma is spending the money six months early or just waiting. Of course, "far money" is better than "near money" when one is paying , so I'd definitely would prefer to wait, but I'm worried about being in the middle of nowhere with the water pump going out. I'm probably worried about something that I need not be concerned about
  12. Congrats on your purchase. If the car is in as good of shape as you indicate, you won't be disappointed. Sounds like you got an excellent deal with a grand in your pocket on this deal!
  13. Well, I'd definitely prefer to wait, but based on the miles I'm putting on, I'll be doing that TB in about 6 months anyway. If I wasn't taking the trip, I wouldn't be overly concerned. I guess I can always just have it checked, although I'm not sure that they can check the water pump without a tear down of the engine. I can imagine graduate school at Lehigh is no cakewalk. I've not had much of a break myself, so I was glad to get the car on the road for a bit. I've always found highway driving relaxing anyway, but the LS makes this a real treat
  14. Well, I just took another long trip in my LS. This was a 1600 mile round trip journey. I'll be taking another really long trip in September of about 4000 miles. This is an amazing vehicle on the highway. My combined mpg averaged about 26 mpg. On stretches of the trip, I was getting 30 mpg-----and I rarely used the cruise control. I consider that astounding for a car that's nearly 4000 lbs with a V-8. How the Lexus engineers pulled this off is just simply amazing. The second thing is the ride, comfort and power delivery. This machine does not tire or fatigue you. After driving that distance, I was actually disappointed to see the excursion end. In any other car, one is generally happy to get the trip over with. Not so with the LS 400. This is simply the best vehicle that one can get. A well cared for used LS is the best bargain in used cars available. My car is an 11 year old vehicle that drives like new. For all practical purposes, it might as well be new because it only has 66k miles on it. Before I take my 4000 mile trip, I'm thinking about changing the timing belt and water pump even though I'm not at the 90K mile interval. (I'm beyond the recommended time interval). With the miles I'm putting on, I'll be doing it in six months anyway. What do you guys think about doing this service early?
  15. I had this happen to me once. Below your coin box and above the parking brake release is an object that looks like a button and has a place for you to insert your key. This button has to be depressed/pushed in as I recall for the trunk to release with the remote. Check your owner's manual for instructions. I don't think I have that on my lexus. Mine's a 98 are you referring to a different year LS400? Mine's is a 96
  16. I've owned both a BMW and a Mercedes prior to buying a LS 400. Both of those cars were money pits. IMO, the LS 400 is the best production car ever built with the perfect combinaton between power and fuel economy. It really gets down to what your preference is. I'm on the road a lot and I have absolutely no desire to "feel the road" or to "choke em on heel dust" with speed. I don't want to feel nothing but smoothness and comfort. I don't want to hear nothing except the jazz from my sound system. I want to cruise at 90 mph and feel like I going 50 mph. I want to spend hours enjoying my vehicle as opposed to spending countless hours in a repair shop with a frontal assault being made on my wallet. The LS exceeds my requirements in this regard and I won't be purchasing any other make of vehicle.
  17. Well, they apparently overlooked route 22 here locally which I generally avoid at all hours of the day! Having lived in NJ for nearly 20 years, I'm not surprised at the ranking. Traffic is horrible over there, particularly on main thoroughfares like the GSP and the turnpike. Come to think of it, route 22 is definitely no biggie in comparison.
  18. LOL I'm from the midwest originally and have lived on the east coast for 25 years. The big difference between the east and my home town is the fact that the eastern portion of the country is much older and lacks the wide open spaces of the midwest. Also the population is generally much denser. Good question about the taxpayer's money. I sometimes wonder about that myself!
  19. I had this happen to me once. Below your coin box and above the parking brake release is an object that looks like a button and has a place for you to insert your key. This button has to be depressed/pushed in as I recall for the trunk to release with the remote. Check your owner's manual for instructions.
  20. I don't know much about the southwest, but having relocated here from NNJ, I gotta say that I think the valley is kinda nice in comparision.
  21. Up to this point, I've never run into anyone from the Lehigh Valley. Based on the three of us here, I can now say I've run into folks from the valley on this board. That's pretty amazing considering that I very rarely see any LS 400's around here. Of course, I can count on one hand the number of LS's I see anywhere as I travel periodically to NNJ and NYC.
  22. Yep.....600K on the original engine. Like I said, the car's body was in decent shape but the leather looked like hell. One could just replace the leather and the car would be looking pretty good. Actually, the car looked like it had been neglected a bit, so the miles are even more amazing in light of that. If I can, I'll try to get a picture of it and post it.
  23. Why is it so amazing?? Any car with proper care and maintanence should last you that long. I had a Grand Prix back in 1990 that went over 200k with no problem. There is no reason Lexus will not do more than that. Just take care of it and it will take care of you - very simple circle of life! To be sure, proper car and maintenance will lengthen the life of most cars, however, most cars are not of Lexus quality. The only cars that routinely reach this sort of mileage are the old mercedes diesals. Most gas engine cars don't run up this kind of mileage. The LS 400 is just one hell of a car!
  24. I had to stop by a client today who runs a service station/auto mechanic shop. He specializes in working on foreign cars. He had a Gen 1 LS 400 sitting in the shop with 600K miles on it. The body was in decent shape but the interior leather was severely cracked nearly everywhere. He said that car needed some work and he had just put a junk yard trans in, but other than that, the car runs ok. He told me that the owner routinely makes a 140 mile round trip jaunt to NYC from my area fairly frequently. Amazing. I'm going to have my ride for a long time.
  25. I have a 1995 LS 400 and get an honest 17 in town and 25 on the road. I have a K&N air filter and use 5-30 Mobil One. I drive the speed limit and am easy on the gas. fhw One of the best things about the LS is the balance between size, power and good gas mileage. I rountinely get 21 mpg with combined City and highway driving. I don't live in a big city and am fortunately not in a lot of traffic jams. The LS is one hell of a car IMO
